Example: "People moved slowly then. There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb County." Harper Lee's TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
Explanation: A hyperbole is an exaggeration of a quality, person, idea, etc.. In this example Harper Lee is exaggerating the towns boring, slow, and uneventful nature. This is successful because it made me think about how the town must be very slow moving and may have many old people.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
Example: "The wife cuts her long hair and sells it to have the money to buy her husband a pocket watch chain. He sells the watch to buy her a hair accessory."
Explanation: Situational Irony is when something that is thought to happen does not. In this example you would not expect the husband to buy a hair accessory . This is a good example of situational irony because it makes me question why the husband bought the wife an accessory.

Example: In the movie Shrek, Shrek states "of course" to many questions asked by Donkey.
Explanation: When Shrek says "of course" he really means absolutely not. Verbal irony is when the thing that is said is different than what was actually meant. This may not be a very serious work but is a very successful use of verbal irony because you are able to understand that the meaning is actually the opposite of what was stated.

Example: "Atheism is a non-prophet organization."
Explanation: Puns are reliant on homophones. In this example the word prophet is being put in place for profit. Most puns have a greater meaning but this one has the same idea as all others and that is to make on laugh, or think. This pun was successful becasue it made me laugh as well as getting a point across. A pun should allow you to interpret something differently.

Example: “Tomorrow is my marriage, but you need me to work overtime. It’s not a big deal; I’ll just skip my marriage.”
Explanation: This kind of sarcasm is called Self-Deprecating sarcasm. This is where the speaker makes himself very insignificant. This device is suppose to show ridicule to someone or an idea, it enables on to show displeasure and mask bitterness. The authors purpose in this is to show how dumb the request was. This sarcasm is very successful because it will allow you to see the tone of the speaker. I knew the speaker was being facetious and what he said was not suppose to be taken serious.
