Reviewing the Digestive Process

Contrast Between Natural and Processed Foods

Shelf Life of

Processed Foods

1. Share the list of foods you eat all the time, sometimes, and rarely.

2. Redistribute quizzes - let's see how we do!

How long would it take for an apple to spoil if it was left on a table?

Special Treat Tomorrow!

How long would the fruit snack last on the table before it spoiled?

1. Share the label you brought to class.

2. What does the word "enriched" mean?

3. Apple vs. fruit snacks

Homework

Apple vs fruit snacks... AGAIN!

Either at home or at a store, find a box of processed food that seems to present itself as containing natural foods. Do the following for the product:

If left on a table, apple would spoil in about two weeks...

Fruit snacks can last years....

Shelf Life?

What does this tell us about how easily the body can break down and use the nutrients in these foods?

1. List the name of the product.

2. Locate on the package how far down on the ingredient list the natural food is listed. Write down the ingredients that come before the natural ones.

3. Calculate the number of teaspoons of sugar in the box.

Real foods break down easily in the body for easy absorption. Dead foods - foods that do not break down after a year on the shelf - are difficult for the body to break down into absorbable nutrients.

There are 4 grams of common sugar in a teaspoon...

Digestive Process Answers

How many teaspoons of sugar are in the box?

Apples vs. Fruit Snacks EXPLAINED!

You will need to know this formula for your homework!

Apple vs. Fruit Snacks

The human body registers fullness and satiety at a cellular level. The apple has enzymes, minerals, vitamins, and fiber, all of which fill you up. The body requires and recognizes these nutrients.

Fruit snacks usually have no enzymes, minerals, vitamins, or fiber.

Enriched

How many apples would it take for you to feel full?

Generally means that the nutrients have been lost during processing. For instance, flour might be altered for safety and then added back to the food.

How many fruit snacks would it take for you to feel full?

When people eat processed foods from which the nutrients have been removed, the body doesn't get the message to stop eating. That's why when people eat processed foods, they eat a lot more.

1. How does the body break down food into its component nutrients?

Answer: Chewing breaks the food down into small parts. Enzymes in the stomach break it down further.

2. How do these nutrients get to the body's cells and organs?

Answer: They are absorbed from the small intestine.

3. What do you think happens if the body does not get the nutrients it needs?

Answer: It does not function well.
