CONYO LANGUAGE AS A FACTOR AFFECTING THE USE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN FORMAL SPEAKING SKILLS OF THE THIRD YEAR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT STUDENTS OF CAVITE STATE UNIVERSITY – SILANG CAMPUS (A.Y. 2016 – 2017 )

Conyo Language has no definite etymology at all, there's unclear origins with no specific point in history. It was just simply defined by Dr. Borlongan in Tokyo Japan, as a Taglish form of language that is spoken in a "maarte" way or sometimes just speaking in Filipino with a heavy foreign language accent. The term can be used to describe a person, their language or even the way they act or dress. Basically, Conyo aimed towards the youth of the upper class or at least, those who want to be perceived as belonging to this social class. Dr. Borlangan also describes Conyo Language as a sociolect, a specific language used by a social group.

The term Conyo has set its foundation in contemporary Filipino language and it is continuously being used by the youths of today. But there's more to it than just being the result of Filipinos knowing two languages well. Today, being conyo isn't about speaking in a certain peculiar way. Nowadays, there seems to be an image of a specific type of person associated with the word. Just like any other kind of language, dialect, and sociolect, the Filipino's Conyo Language may still continue to evolve through time. And it is always possible to develop new words and new languages which is such a normal process in language evolution.

HYPOTHESIS

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The researchers are motivated to make a study about Conyo language for some reasons that caught their attention on how Conyo language affects the learning of students in a classroom setting. The researchers come up to state possible problems like the factors and effects and as well solutions which can be helpful in understanding how Conyo Language works and also for the awareness of the learners, teachers, the university and other researchers. The researchers scanned related literature to have more knowledge and resources which support this study. They also chose the Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management third year students because these students are more inclined to learn different language as a need to their profession in the future.

After conducting survey, the researchers started to tally all the data. The researchers recognized the Shannon and Weaver Model of communication under Speech Act Theory is related to their study. In this model it shows the process of communication wherein the sender is the originator of message, encoder is transmitter engine of the message through a channel and decoder is reception of the message before it landed by receiver as the destination of message. The researchers believe that this the model attracts both academics of Human communication and Information theorist to leads their further research in communication. And this theory is fitted how Conyo Language or one language transmitted from one person to another. The researcher developed the model through their own information they used Teachers as their Sender, Conyo Language as the Encoder and medium of communication, Environment as the Channel or pathway of message, Conyo Language as the Decoder and medium of communication and student as the Receiver of Conyo Language.

The researcher work on the figures and the data gathered in the survey. And it resulted that the respondents are aware of the Conyo Language, yet, they still prefer to use Tagalog language as their medium of communication. They much define it as "Tag-lish". The respondents are on the safe side in speaking Conyo language, they said "sometimes." Same results when asked if its beneficial or not. They said it is somehow beneficial especially for socialization purposes and during the class discussion. Also, for them, Conyo language affect them in expressing themselves easily. As for the ratings, they rate themselves 7-5 (Often) in using Conyo language. For the proficiency in speaking, same results, 7-5 (competent enough).

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The following steps were used by the researchers in gathering the data needed in this study.

SUMMARY

RESEARCH DESIGN

First, the researchers coordinate with the representative of the third year Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management, Ms. Athena Beatrice Joaquin, the contact person of the researchers to inform them that they are going to conduct their study through their help. Second, is to give the respondents an overview about Conyo language and tell them what the study is all about. Third, is to formally let the respondents answer the questionnaires provided. And the last step is to gather every questionnaire and data needed to compile and proceed to the tally of the results for the survey.

Language is the means of all communication it leads symbols and letters to create meaning in many situations such as in field of business, medical, career and most of all in education. So the researchers chose to have a research about language concerning education. Nowadays, here in the Philippines, Conyo Language is in trend. This is the language used by the teenagers as their medium of communication as a part of the millennial generation impact.

The researchers utilized and employed the descriptive and review method of design. Since the study is after the quantitative result of the survey, that will be the basis of the study to come up with a concrete evidence for the study.

As Calderon and Gonzales (1993) stated:

Descriptive method, otherwise known as “normative survey” is a fact-finding study with adequate and accurate interpretation. It is to collect demographic data about people’s behaviour, practices, intentions, beliefs, attitudes, opinions, judgement interest, perception and the like and then such data are analysed, organized and interpreted.

The researchers used descriptive method because they drew out the perception of the respondents about the Conyo Language in Cavite State University – Silang Campus. Also, how they use it in their everyday conversations especially in academic purposes.

The research conducted the survey last October 26, 2016 in third building of Cavite State University – Silang Campus, room 345 and their respondents are the second and third year Tourism Management students. The researcher had a problem because of the total number of respondents they gathered is not enough to meet the required number of respondents of seventy-five. The researchers needed to search for another set of respondents and so, the research decided to gather the last set of survey with the second year Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management students.

POPULATION AND SAMPLES

The survey was conducted last September 27 until September 29, 2016 at Cavite State University – Sliang Campus, rooms 325 and 331. This lasted for several days because the researchers are after the accurate number of the respondents to make sure that every second and third year students of Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management will have a chance to answer the questionnaires provided.

The students from Third Year, Bachelor of Tourism Management from Cavite State University – Silang Campus are the main respondents of this study. But due to insufficient number of students from third year, the researchers decided to get the remaining 20 respondents from second year, Bachelor of Tourism Management. Giving a sum total of seventy-five (75) respondents for this study.

The researchers used the simple random sample in choosing the respondents, they are all BS Tourism students from second and third year level in Cavite State University – Silang Campus.

CONCLUSION

As the world changes, so as the language that we are hearing or reading. In this research, the researchers conclude that, the second and third year Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management students of Cavite State University-Silang Campus have the knowledge regarding the Conyo language. The language is a tool for the students to express and also to easily cope up with the subjects that are somehow difficult to them. Even if it is informal to use in educational purposes but still it serves as their channel of expression towards the lesson.

Conyo language may not be formal when used in the school settings but it is the way of some students to share their knowledge about a certain topic. It is clearly stated in this study that it is already a part of their system of learning. As future educators, it is valid for students to express using the Conyo language but not at all times. It is still a need to teach them the formality of speaking one language. As long as the students understand a specific topic using the Conyo language, that is what matters. And at the end of the day we are still pursuing the students to be proficient enough to use the English language in formal occasions.

To sum all things up, anyone can use the Conyo language for expression, for education, and for socialization, but in the end we still need to use a specific language in formal purposes. Anyone can use a language but there’s a boundary of using it depending on the situation, on the purpose, and especially the reason for using the language.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This research study mainly focussed on “Conyo Language as a Factor Affecting Formal English Speaking Skills of the 3rd Year Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management Students of Cavite State Uniersity – Silang Campus ( A. Y. 2016 – 2017 )"

This study is delimited to seventy-five (75) students from third year Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (A.Y. 2016 – 2017), to be conducted at the Cavite State University – Silang Campus.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The theory implies to this study because it is concern to the precise meaning to convey in every message. The researchers set the Conyo language as the encoder as well as the decoder of the communication because it sends and has its definite meaning to be understood by the receiver most commonly known to be the teacher in a classroom setting, it is up to the receiver to accept or reject the message from the sender and send a response afterward.

The researchers decided to incorporate the Conyo Language under the encoder as well as the decoder because this is a channel for communication process wherein it cannot be easily be understood because of the mixed language it is using yet, the receiver which the researchers set as the teachers because in a classroom setting, the students are commonly using Conyo language to answer a certain question and it is up to the teacher whether s/he allows this kind of communication or not. And then, a feedback will be provided right after the language is being decoded.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

Shannon-Weaver’s Model of Communication

Shannon and Weaver argued that there were three levels of problems for communication within the concept of the technical problem, on how accurately the message can be transmitted; the semantic problem, on how precisely is the meaning 'conveyed'; and the effectiveness problem, on how effectively does the received meaning affect behaviour.

The Shannon–Weaver model was designed to mirror the functioning of radio and telephone technologies. Their initial model consisted of three primary parts: sender, channel, and receiver. The sender was the part of a telephone a person spoke into, the channel was the telephone itself, and the receiver was the part of the phone where one could hear the other person. Shannon and Weaver also recognized that often there is static that interferes with one listening to a telephone conversation, which they deemed noise. The noise could also mean the absence of signal.

In a simple model, often referred to as the transmission model or standard view of communication, information or content (e.g. a message in natural language) is sent in some form (as spoken language) from an emissor/ sender/ encoder to a destination/ receiver/ decoder. This common conception of communication views communication as a means of sending and receiving information. The strengths of this model are simplicity, generality, and quantifiability. Mathematicians Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver structured this model based on the following elements:

• An information source, which produces a message.

• A transmitter, which encodes the message into signals

• A channel, to which signals are adapted for transmission

• A receiver, which 'decodes' (reconstructs) the message from the signal.

• A destination, where the message arrives.

• In a classroom setting, the researchers think that for the students, they understand more the lesson and connect more to the discussion when Conyo language is used in the class because, the researchers assumed that the students’ perspective to the English language is a difficult subject or language to use.

• The researchers assumed that Conyo Language opens another door of self-expression for the people especially to the students who are having a hard time to explain in pure English, in that instance, the students have the chance now to voice out what they are thinking because in Conyo Language they are not just speaking English but Filipino as well.
