Existentialism

  • Animal Testing is an important part of medicine development and has been for 100’s of years
  • In the USA there is the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) which was passed in 1966
  • According to the AWA an “animal” is "any live or dead dog, cat, monkey (nonhuman primate mammal), guinea pig, hamster, rabbit, or such other warm blooded animal."
  • Centers and emphasizes on the importance and value of humans
  • Animal testings --> as long as the benefits outweigh the costs
  • Modern humanitarian --> the way we treat animals is very connected with how we value human beings
  • “We respect the rights of animals because it is a mere extension of the rights that we grant to other human beings...The more an animal is like us, the more we identify with its suffering and seek to alleviate that.” (Bushfield)
  • Perhaps still speciesist
  • "We should be bound by the laws of humanity to give gentle usage to these creatures" (Hume)

Naturalism

Traditions or Torture

''You ask about my opinion on vivisection. I quite agree that it is justifiable for real investigations on physiology; but not for mere damnable and detestable curiosity. It is a subject which makes me sick with horror, so I will not say another word about it, else I shall not sleep tonight.''

Aristotle, Herophilus, Erasistratus, Galen and Bernard

Christianity

Judaism

  • Bullfighting is a tradition that has been present in Spain since 711 A.D
  • Recently during Easter of 2016 there were protesters in a square in Barcelona
  • This protest comes a week after 10,000 people attended a pro-bullfighting protest in eastern Spain
  • Insulin
  • Modern anaesthetics and antibiotics
  • Blood transfusions
  • Various kinds of transplants
  • Vaccinations

  • “The righteous person regards the life of his beast.” (12:10 )
  • Animals are God's creatures --> must be treated with respect and compassion
  • Avoid causing other creatures pain (tzar baalei chayim)
  • There are regulations and restrictions
  • God gave humans dominion over animals --> guardianship
  • “A person must feed his animals before himself” (Deuteronomy 11:15)
  • “An animal's suffering must be relieved” (Deuteronomy 12:4)
  • Humans were created in God's likeness
  • General dominance
  • No spcific restrictions, but there are suggested guidlines
  • Saint Peter and the sheet filled with meat
  • "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you." (Genesis 9:3)
  • ”The righteous care for the needs of their animals” (Proverbs 12:10)
  • Animals are still God's creatures, or we were given dominance
  • ”Since an animal's natural life is a gift from God, it follows that God's right is violated when the natural life of his creatures is perverted.” (Andrew Linzey)

Saint Peter

Discussion Continued

Discussion

• Why do you think that people think that using animals for entertainment is okay?

• What is more important: Keeping traditions that have been around for hundreds of years, or protecting animal rights?

• Why is it okay to classify some animals as “animals” and not others?

• Is it more justifiable to use humans for testing instead of animals? Why or why not?

• Even though Christianity and Judaism have a similar origin, they speak quite differently about animal rights. Why could this be?

• Do you support medicinal animal testing, to a greater or lesser extent?

• Would you be willing to sacrifice beauty products, makeup (e.g. Always, L’oreal, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Maybelline, Nivea) etc., to limit the demand of animal tested products?

• Do you think that limiting the demand for such products would make companies more inclined to change their ethics (to increase sales again)?

Islam

  • Treat animals with passion
  • Slaughter
  • Quran
  • "There is no man who kills even a sparrow or anything smaller, without deserving it, but God will question him about it on the judgement day" and "Whoever is kind to creatures of God is kind to himself"
