Describe Miss Maudie Atkinson

Miss Maudie is around 50 years old, wears straw hats, and men's coverals.

Miss Maudie's speech comes across as a bit tough and rigid. She calls everyone by their names. Miss Maudie rarely smiles but if she does you can see prongs in her teeth.

Miss Maudie and Mrs. Dubose

Miss Maudie gets made fun of for being a Baptist and believing in foot washing.

Contrast: Mrs. Dubose thinks that Scout and Jem won't be successful at anything in life while Miss Maudie believes that Scout and Jem will be successful in life. Mrs. Dubose is always speaking in an angry and mean way. She is also racist. Miss Maudie rarely says anything hurtful to others and believes everyone should be treated fairly.

Passage of Choice

During Miss Maudie's fire she said, "Only thing I worried about last night was all the danger and commotion it caused. This whole neighborhood could have gone up. Mr. Avery'll be in bed for a week-- he's right stove up. He's too old to do things like that and I told him so. Soon as I can get my hands clean and when Stephanie Crawford's not looking, I'll make him a Lane cake. That Stephanie's been after my recipe for thirty years, and if she thinks I'll give it to her just because I'm staying with her she's got another think coming" (Lee, 61).
