Let's chat!

  • What do you hope for your own future?
  • What futuristic things from science fiction movies do you want to happen in real life?
  • "The best is yet to come". Do you agree?
  • What will the world's biggest problem be in the future?
  • What does the past teach us about the future?
  • Does the expression "the good old days" mean that the future will probably be worse?
  • Would you like to live 100 years in the future or the past? Why?

Pretend you're at an department potluck.

WOULD

With a partner, brainstorm a list of things that you might be offered at an office party.

Then, say what would happen if you had some?

Choose one of the items off your list and offer it to your fellow classmates.

"Would you like some coffee? I've got some great coffee right here..."

"No thanks. If I had coffee, I would be awake all night.

"If I had some ___, I would probably_____."

"Would" means "will", but as a hypothetical for something that may or may not be true.

For example: I would ride my horse to work (but I don't have one.

I wouldn't go to Sierra Leon right now, because of ebola.

TO MAKE A CLAUSE, YOU NEED TO USE THE PAST OF THE FIRST VERB:

If you drank a beer, you would feel a little woobly.

Grab a partner:

Future simple is usually used:

A survey of students revealed strong dissatisfaction with the university environment. You've been chosen by your peers to make official plans to improve the buildings and services for students.

Prepare your announcement.

- to make a promise ("I promise I'll buy you a pony for Christmas.")

- to make a prediction ("It will rain tomorrow.")

- to make a future statement with 100% confidence ("The sun will rise tomorrow.")

Let's look at some examples:

the FUTURE!

This is how you assemble it:

English is weird.

This fiscal year will be more difficult than the last, so it's important that we be prepared. I will organize a special committee for workplace safety to prevent a repeat of that fiasco that happened last quarter, and I promise that we'll run a tighter ship. If we can play it safe, hopefully profits will be up by June at the latest.

verb infinitive

the verb to be

"going"

to rock it like ain't nobody rocked it

going

going

going

am

is

are

to make a sandwich

Sometimes, when you're talking about

a future plan, you use the construction

"I am going to . . ."

-My sister is going to buy a car!

-I'm going to be an evil genius!

-This party is going to be legend ...

to sing you a beautiful song

promise, prediciton, or 100%?

Now you try!

"... I promise I will...."

  • Oh my god, you've eaten all the cake?!
  • Your performance is really down. If things don't shape up, we're going to have to let you go.
  • You forgot to pick me up after work last week.
  • What should we get the boss for her birthday? You said you'd take care of it.
  • Could you take a look at those orders? They've been sitting on your desk all week.

Now, making predictions.

Look at these situations. What is the PROBABILITY that they will happen to you?

- it will happen (100%)

- it is very likely (90%)

- it might happen (50/50)

- it won't likely happen (40%)

- it probably won't happen (5%)

- it will never happen, not a chance (0%)
