What is hygiene?

Health in Elizabethan Times

* Medicine was very hard to make

*Very basic medicine was not available to everyone and were generally expensive

*People had limited access to medicine

* Tobacco, lily-root, arsenic, butter, onion, garlic and dried toad were used to cure sicknesses as home remedies only made situations worse

* Physicians used to to take blood from patients to try and extract the unhealthy blood cells.

* Hygiene is a habit practiced by people to keep clean.

* Hygiene is maintaining health and preventing disease, especially through cleanliness.

*Health and Hygiene is often related to each other since hygiene is needed to keep healthy.

* Health in the Elizabethan time was also very poor.

* The worst disease in those days was the Bubonic Plague ( Black Death ) and many people died from it.

* Knowledge about medicine and medicinal practices were very limited.

* One of the most major disease was called the bubonic plague ( also known as Black Death)

* Another major disease was small pox. This broke out shortly after the bubonic plague.

*In London alone almost 20,000 people died from this plague

* They didn't have the facilities we have today

* Things that are considered unhygienic for us such as not taking a shower was considered as an every day lifestyle.

* The best medical profession during those times were the physicians

*Only wealthy people were able to afford them

*They wore unusual looking outfits to keep themselves safe from diseases and the smell of rotting bodies.

Ways of keeping hygiene in Elizabethan Times

* People then used to bathe with old wooden buckets.

* Water would be heated over a hearth ( outdoor fire ).

* Different class people would take baths on different dates and times as of how much they can afford for their needs.
