Compound Sentences with Explanatory Statements

David Lessard

Compound Sentences

A compound sentence consists of two independent clauses connected by a comma and a coordinating conjunction, a semicolon, or a colon.

An Independent Clause

Compound sentences with explanatory statement

This particular pattern consists of and independent clause containing a general statement or idea followed by a colon followed by an independent clause containing a specific statement or example of the idea.

Use this pattern whenever you have a general idea that you want to explain in greater detail.

General statement (idea) : Specific statement (example)

Coordinating Conjunctions

It contains a subject and a verb, expresses a complete thought, and can stand on its own.

Example: "Chris Carangelo will be going to Paraguay over spring break." constitutes an independent clause.

Practice Exercises

Example: The upper school schedule will change next year: periods will be longer than they are this year.

A coordinating conjuncion is a word used to connect two equivalent parts of speech or grammatical constructs.

How many of you recall FANBOYS from middle school?

F= for, A= and, N= nor, B= but, O= or, Y= yet, and S= so.

These are all coordinating condjunctions and can be used to join independent clauses to create a compound sentence.

Example: Holden White plays baseball, and he claims to be HUGE!

Directions: Decide whether each of the following statements is general or specific. Using each statement, create a compound sentence with explanatory statements.
