Early Production

  • In 1935, the company produced its first toy, a wooden duck, along with the first construction toy, Kirk's Sandgame.
  • In 1942, the building burned down but production is quickly resumed, however, Kirk looks for a new material to make toys out of instead of wood.
  • The company created its first concept of Lego bricks in 1949.
  • The company still produced wooden toys along with the new Legos.

First Lego Characters

  • After the creation of the Mini-Figure, special themed characters were created
  • These characters had more detail than other mini-figures including special hats, torsos, and sometimes items such as swords
  • The first characters were; Captain Redbeard, The Evil Wizard, and King Arthur

The Mini-Figure

  • In 1978, 30 years after the modern lego style is created, Lego created the Mini-Figure
  • The Mini-figure was scaled with other bricks like doors and cars
  • They had detachable heads, arms, hands, torsos, and legs for extra customization
  • The first Mini-Figures were very simple, all sharing the same yellow smiley face, and usually didn't have actual names

First Sets

  • In 1964, Lego started to create building sets. These sets came with instructions on how to make them and all the bricks needed plus a few spare parts
  • The first set was a train that also came with some tracks to ride on
  • By 1966, there are 57 different sets

The Foundation

  • The Lego Group was founded by Ole Kirk Kristiansen in 1932 in the village of Billund, Denmark.
  • The company produced ladders, stools, ironing boards, and wooden toys.

Early Lego People

  • The first Lego people were like little toy soldiers. They were made out of one piece of plastic and sticked to the bricks
  • When the redesigned brick is created, sets soon came with people made from several different bricks
  • During the 1970s, a concept of a scale lego person was created

New Design

  • In 1958, the LABB gets redesigned with a stud-and-tube coupling system which extends the possibilities of combination and makes the bricks more stable
  • The new design also brings with it new types of bricks including slopes and letter blocks
  • A concept for a Lego wheel is created along with the new design but doesn't go into production until 1962

Along with the new themes, Lego started to produced lisigned themes with sets based off of movies.

These new themes included, Batman, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Indiana Jones.

Soon after making licensed themes, Lego created its own licensed video games. The video games would take the player through the movie's story in lego and with its own quirky humor. The first game was Lego Star Wars the Original Trilogy, which was soon turned into The Complete Saga with the Episodes 1 through 3 added.

The creation of the Lego characters came with new themed sets including; pirates, castle knights, space exploration, and city.

People have created their own models and have shared them with the world. Some simple like a hotrod, or extremely complex like an actual working car made out of legos.

The list goes on, there a literally millions of different community made models ranging from custom mini-figures all the way to life size people.

First Lego Bricks

  • The first lego bricks were created in 1949 and called The Lego Automatic Binding Brick. The LABB came in two variants, 2x2 and 2x4.
