Where do we get coal from?

How is it obtained?

To obtain coal you must to go to an underground seam. A seam is a thick layer of the ore (in this case coal) and the layer must be thick enough to be successfully mined. One way to mine is surface mining. It involves taking away the soil and rock on top of the coal seam so the coal may be separated from the surface. Then, once excavated, trucks haul away the coal. To use the coal, you simply just burn it.

The worlds top coal producers are

1. China

2. The U.S.A.

3. India

4.Germany, Europe and

5.Australia.

China uses the most coal. In 2011, China alone used about 3.8 billion tons.

Energy Transformations

Some More Disadvantages

Coal starts off in the very beginning as plant material. Then, it turns to peat. Next to lignite, to bituminous coal and finally to anthracite coal. During these stages, there is an increase of metamorphism. Metamorphism is pressure, chemically active fluids and heat.

  • When burning dirty coal, it is possible to create pollution problems.
  • Sometimes mining can cause health problems for the miners.

Disadvantages

Thanks for watching!

When you burn coal it puts out harmful gasses into the air such as sulfur dioxide and other sulfuric acids which can lead to global warming.

Who can use it? Who cannot?

Coal is a available for a wide range of people, it can go pretty much anywhere, just with a little work. All you would need to do is load up a dump truck or other container of some sort, and drive to where you need to take it. The main regions that would not be able to use coal easily would be South America, Greenland, Africa, and parts of Russia.

Advantages

Coal Energy

~Facts~

  • Coal is an inexpensive resource
  • Coal is easy to burn.
  • The world has many areas in which coal can be harvested from.

Coal is the most used resource to produce electricity.

The US produces approximately 1 billion tons of coal every year, which is only about 12% of the worlds supply of coal.

Every person in the USA uses about 3.7 tons of coal every year.
