Hammod inspires me because he took a step that
many men are unwilling to take, the act of cross dressing, to bring attention to the rampant sexual harassment of women were he lives. He is a role model for me because he was willing to risk his own personal safety as well as his own place within society to bring light to a widely ignored issue.
Waleed Hammod is the person I choose for this project. I found his story while perusing through Reddit. He is an actor in Egypt, and he decided to cross dress to experience the harassment felt by the women of Egypt. He is attempting to replace institutionalized actions of his fellow Egyptian males, who see it socially acceptable to sexual harass who ever they see fit. Through his break with social norm, Hammod attempted to raise awareness of sexual harassment.
The Hummingbird
I feel that the Hummingbird Story helps me feel that no matter how minor my actions may be, the fact that I'm trying to make a difference is what is important. I feel that this is what I will take away from this project, the fact that it is important that I at least try to make a difference.
Why do we need dissent?
I believe that without the dissent that some of our more outspoken members of society provide, of society would be a stagnant place. When I think of people that have really changed the world through dissent I think of people such as Martin Luther king Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi.
Strain Theory
According to Merton's theory, there are five types of deviance: conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism and rebellion. Hammod fits the path of rebellion because he is cross dressing, which in most parts of the world is seen taboo, especially in Egypt. Hammod put his desire to break conformity ahead of his place in the social hierarchy.
