What is Boo Radley Trying to Say/Symbolize

  • The gum in the knot hole symbolizes Boo Radely trying to gain trust and friendship for Scout and Jem, also this is a way to get them to come back. Same as the gum, the indian head pennies are another way to gain a kind of friendship with Scout and Jem, because back then, kids became really exited when they found pennies.
  • The twine is like the twine of the fates. (The longer the twine the longer your life)Boo Radley gave them lots of twine. Later, he saved them from Bob Ewell. On page 320, Scout lists everything that Boo gave them from the knothole, except for the twine. But the last thing she mentioned was he gave them their lives...
  • Scout and Jem knew that the carved figures on the soap were them. First, the boy was wearing shorts, and had hair just like Jem's. The girl had bangs, just like Scout. They couldn't think of anyone they knew that carved soap with such skill, which led them to believe that Boo Radley carved it for them. Boo Radley realized that Scout and Jem were trying to clean up the racism and stereotypes in Maycomb. That is why he carved them out of soap. Soap cleans.
  • The pocket watch symbolizes Boo Radley's arrested life by his dad, and the amount of time that has past.
  • The Tree symbolizes that Boo is dying because the tree is dying.
  • The Blanket that Boo Radley gave scout symbolizes truth and kindness
  • Finally, Boo fixed Jem's pants as a way of being kind to them.

Why did Mr. Nathan Radley Fill up the Knothole?

  • Mr. Nathan must have seen Boo putting things in the knothole.
  • He probably thought Boo was having "fun", which didn't agree with Mr. Nathan's footwashing beliefs.
  • He filled up the knothole with cement to make sure Boo couldn't have anymore "fun".

Gifts From Boo Radley

Are the Gifts for Scout and Jem?

Boo Radley put the gifts in scout's tree house, which means its for scout and Jem. He also put gifts that they would like and gifts that would make them want to come back. Only a few were applicable to Scout and Jem. He also put some gifts at Scout's and Jem's eye level, which means it was meant for them.

Boo Radley's Gifts to Scout and Jem

  • "Next morning the twine was where we had left it. When it was still there on the third day, Jem pocketed it. From then on, we considered everything we found in the knot-hole our property." (Page 66)
  • "My first impulse was to get it into my mouth as quickly as possible, but I remembered where I was."(37)
  • "He held them down to me. They were almost perfect miniatures of two children. The boy had on shorts, and a shock of soapy hair fell to his eyebrows. I looked up at Jem. A point of straight brown hair kicked downwards from his part. I had never noticed it before. Jem looked from the girl-doll to me. The girl-doll wore bangs. So did I."(67)
  • "He gave us two soap dolls, a broken watch and chain, a pair of good-luck pennies, and our lives."(320)
  • "'Atticus said it would probably be worth ten dollars, knife, chain and all, if it were new. 'Did you swap with somebody at school?' he asked."(68)
  • "'You’re right. We’d better keep this and the blanket to ourselves. Someday, maybe, Scout can thank him for covering her up.'

'Thank who?' I asked.

'Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you didn’t know it when he put the blanket around

you.'” (81-82)

  • "“Tree’s dying. You plug ‘em with cement when they’re sick. You ought to know that, Jem.”"(70)
  • "'They’d been sewed up. Not like a lady sewed ‘em, like somethin’ I’d try to do. [Jem]

All crooked. It’s almost like—'

[Scout] '—somebody knew you were comin‘ back for ’em.'" (Page 66)
