Athena-

Goddess of the city, wisdom, courage, strength & war strategy.

Zeus's favorite child. The only one who can use his weapons

What are these

people looking at?

What is a MYTH?

  • Comes from Greek word meaning to 'tell a story'
  • A story that typically revolves around the activities of a supernatural (god/goddess/monster) in order to explain the origins (birth) of the world and everything in it.

Poseidon & Athena have competed with each other for eons

They both were asked by the King to give a gift to the city

She gave the olive tree

He gave a salt water pond & horses

Greek Mythology

The people felt Athena's gift was more useful

Is the assembly (collection) of myths.

They name the city after her and built/dedicate the Parthenon to her.

Athens

Poseidon is hurt by this

The mythology of ancient greeks included a dazzling array of deities, demigods, monsters & heroes.

These figures inhabited a realm that stretched beyond the Greek landscape

From the snow capped Mt. Olympus to the dismal Underworld.

I'm gonna need more candy for this.

Despite their awesome powers, the gods & goddesses were similar to people.

They had feelings such as pride, jealousy, love, & a thirst for revenge.

The deities often left Mt. O, to become involved in the affairs of mortals.

They were not above using tricks & disguises to influence the mortals.

Sounds pretty shady to me.

Hercules

The son of Zeus and the mortal Alcmena. Zeus's wife, the goddess Hera, was enraged at this and was determined to destroy Hercules.

Hercules seeks to prove himself to his father.

Like I'm supposed to be impressed...

He marries Margara and had 3 children.

Hera can not stand seeing Hercules happy so she made him go insane.

In his madness he thinks his family are his enemies and he slaughters his wife and kids.

He realized what he has done and was devastated. To atone for his sin, he seeks the Oracle of Delphi

Medusa was a beautiful woman with golden locks of hair. She lived in Athens Greece and was one of Athena's priestess. There she was to remain a virgin and serve Athena.

The greeks built temples to honor the gods. They held festivals, sacrifices & competitions.

MEDUSA

The Oracle tells him to go complete the tasks the King of Mycenae will give him.

Enter Perseus. He is on a mission to save his girlfriend Andromeda from the Kraken but in order to do this he has to take Medusa's head. (The turning things into stone). He will use the shied Athena gave him, Zeus gave him a sword, and Hades a helmet.

When Medusa head was severed from her body Pegasus sprang from her neck. Remember she was with Poseidon.

Perseus will fly on Pegasus to reach his girlfriend.

Athens will place Medusa head on the Shield and later on she will give it to Hercules for (12 Labors)

But one day Poseidon noticed Medusa and had to have her. So he decides to rape her in Athena's temple. Athena is so angry that she transformed Medusa into the monster we know her as.

The Story of Pandora's Box

or Jar...

Rhea giving another child to Cronus

Cronus eating one of his kids. Yummy

You expect me to believe this crap.

Cronus losing his lunch

Playa gonna play

In order to punish Prometheus for giving FIRE to the humans, Zeus orders Hephaestus and the other gods to create Pandora (first mortal woman). She was presented to Prometheus's foolish brother Epimethius as his bride.

Aphrodite-gave beauty, grace & desire

Hermes- cunning & deceitful mind, and a crafty tongue.

Athena-clothed her and taught her to work with her hands.

Poseidon-necklace that prevented drowning.

Apollo-taught her to play the lyre and sing.

Zeus-gave her a foolish, mischievous and idle nature

Hera- gave her CURIOSITY.

Zeus also gave her a jar and warned her to never open it

As a result of Pandora opening the jar. Zeus saw riots, fights, & murders from humans.

Horrified by this, he decided to wipe out humanity with a great flood.

What does this story sound like?

The BOX/JAR

Knowing her curiosity would consume her. Zeus put all the evils of the world into the box so that she would send them to plague the world once it was opened.

The evils in the box were greed, envy, strife, sickness, suffering, & death.

SHOCKED BY WHAT SHE WITNESSED. PANDORA QUICKLY SHUT THE BOX TRAPPING HOPE INSIDE.

What story does this sound like?

Prometheus warned his son King Deucalion and his wife Pyrrha (fire) about the flood. He told them to build an ark and stock it.

Noah

Sounds like what Ark?

Eve eating the forbidden apple

Flood lasted 9 day & 9 nights. Drowning all human & animals on earth except King D & his wife P.

Once the flood subsided they went to a temple and were told to "throw behind...the bones of your mother". Referring to Mother Earth, the 2 threw stones behind their backs.

From Deucalion's stones sprung men

From Pyrrha's stones sprung women
