Sally Mann was born in 1951 in Lexington. Staying close to her Virginia roots,she has photographed the American south since the 70's. She is well known for her family portraits and landscapes of the south. Although her work is sometimes controversial, it has gained a wide audience and has become very influential.

Her work is at times controversial but it captures the minor and major themes of everyday life. Her artwork is elegant and sometimes a bit bizarre.
