Simile

A simile is a figurative language device that compares two nouns using the word "like" or "as".

This an example of a simile because it is comparing "she" and "highway" using the word "like".

Metaphor

A metaphor implies comparison, in which a word or phrase ordinarily and primarily used of one thing is applied to another.

This is an example of a metaphor because it is comparing the "girl" to "fire" without using the word "like" or "as".

Idiom

Idioms are expressions and figurative phrases that appear in every language that do not literally mean what they say.

This is an example of an idiom because they don't literally have their head in the clouds. Our language understands that it means they are muddled by fantasies.

Imagery

Imagery is the creation of a mental picture by word choice and description. It often utilizes sensory descriptions.

Example:

"so bright, she can burn your eyes"

This is an example of imagery because it paints a mental picture. It is describing how bright she was by using sensory (eyes/sight) description.

Alliteration

The repetition of the same sound at the beginning of words in a line of poetry or in a sentence.

Example:

"burn, baby, burn, baby"

This is an example of alliteration because it is repeating the b sound at the beginning of each word.

Symbolism

Symbolism is an object, word, or image that has a deeper significance than just its literal meaning. It represents something more than itself.

This is an example of symbolism because the girl is not literally on fire. Fire represents spirit and burning intensity.

Hyperbole

A hyperbole is an exaggeration that is not meant to be taken literally.

This is an example of a hyperbole because it is an exaggeration of how many people stare. It's not meant to be taken seriously that absolutely everyone is staring at her.

The end.
