Genesis 7:1-5

The Lord then said to Noah, "Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation. Take with you seven pairs of every kind of animal… a male and its mate...Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made" And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.

What beliefs does this artwork depict?

How does this artwork depict these beliefs?

This artwork depicts the beliefs of not only the story of Noah but also the God’s promise of protection and love. In this painting humanity is depicted as vulnerable as they are naked but because God is so compassionate he saves the people of good will e.g. Noah.

This painting is of “The Great Flood”. The ark in which Noah’s family escapes, floats at the rear of the picture whilst the rest of humanity tries frantically to scramble to some point of safety. The picture which has large number of figures, conforms the most closely to the format of the paintings that had been done around the world.

The grey background symbolizes confusion and uncertainty whilst in the foreground a dusty green land is shown symbolizing how God is Saviour. In the mid-ground there are two trees emphasizing the growth of humanity and the freshness God tried to spread around the world. The water is the connective path from the dull grey to the hopeful green which symbolizes how God’s love can save people and triumph mortality. This artwork is connected t0 Genesis in the Bible which tells the tale of this Great Flood and Noah’s Ark.

What is the Sistine Chapel?

The most predominant painter of the artworks in the Sistine Chapel was Michelangelo who painted the entire ceiling and some other works as well. It took him 4 years (1508-1512) to complete and contrary to popular belief, he painted the entire ceiling standing up right. An interesting fact is that he actually did not enjoy working on this project and even wrote a poem about his misery. He hated painting the Sistine Chapel and complained immensely of his hatred for the task.

The Sistine Chapel is the private chapel of the Popes in Rome. It was built by and named after Sixtus IV in 1473. Some 25,000 people a day, or five million people a year, visit this chapel to observe the incredible artworks within. The New Catholic Pope is elected in the Sistine Chapel with the most recent election being Pope Francis.
