Rhetorical Situation

Genre Context

Purpose:

  • It varies and has grown over the past years.
  • Includes gang marking, expressing political opinions, artistic skills, and boredom.

Audience:

  • Appeals to younger generation
  • Many older people consider it vandalism
  • General audience
  • Graffiti is an art form that quickly became popular all over the world.
  • The first modern graffiti writer is widely known as Cornbread, a highschool student, started tagging city walls for a girl (1967).
  • Graffiti by definition is known as a defiant and public exhibition.

What is graffiti?

The Oxford Dictionary considers graffiti to be "Writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place."

However for the purposes of this presentation we will expand this definition.

Benefits:

"kilroy was here" is one of the first forms of graffiti. It first appeared during WWII, thought to have originated by a US solider.

Limitations:

  • Most graffiti is illegal so it often has to compete with the government
  • Its has a negative stigma, when in a place it lowers the personal want to be in that place.

"Banksy’s Dump Trump mural was one of the most recognizable anti-Trump artworks during the election campaign. ‘The mural was a joke and so was Trump. Unfortunately the punchline never came and it’s scary as hell,’ Hansky said in a statement. The mural was erased early this year by the building’s owners – though Bansky has said he’d happily paint it again"
