In 1855, Newfoundland was under a political fight with itself, about their constitution, that ws a big political concern.
Something else that was happening in the mid-1800's was food shortages.
There were shortages in the cod, seal fisheries, and there were many problems in the market, and there was potato blight.
Also, because there was so much fish there, fisherman got payed little, and they didn't like that.
