Chinook and I did some camping all around ANWR for 4 days and went on a Porcupine Caribou Herd excursion to see the beautiful caribou.

Went back to Juneau and

flew back to Raleigh on

November 25th

Denali National Preserve

(to Juneau) ~ 700 miles

  • Description: This refuge is 19 million acres, created to protect the variety of wildlife there. It is managed by USFWS, and established by President Eisenhower in 1960 and expanded in 1980. It is the largest wildlife refuge in the US.
  • Special Interest: Wolves, grizzly bears, golden eagles, polar bears, millions of other birds, and the porcupine caribou herd are just some animals in the ANWR. 1.5 million acres (5% of ANWR) is being debated because those coasts have potential for oil drilling.

I spent 6 days here, dogsledding, hiking, and staying at the magnificent Old Sourdough Studio with my new retired sled dog Chinook!

  • Value: Oil companies are trying to get the government to remove refuge status for 5% of ANWR so that they can drill for oil there. People for the protection of the largest US refuge agree with the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act, which protects all parts of the refuge.
  • Other: Photography and videography is so popular that the US Fish and Wildlife Service has issued specific date times to fill out applications depending on what time of year a person goes.

~ 400 miles

Sitka National Historical Park

  • Description: A 6 million acre preserve, all wilderness save one road, Denali Preserve includes North America's tallest mountain: Mt. McKinley. In 1917, it was first just Mt. McKinley National Park, then expanded to incorporate Denali National Monument and Denali National Preserve. In 1980 they all combined to become Denali National Park and Preserve.
  • Special Interest: Denali National Preserve is filled with glacial lakes, icy tundra, forest, and mountains. Animals include black bears (in forests) and brown bears (in tundra), 169 bird species, wolves, etc.

This was a day trip while I was in Tongass.

Value: For Americans, visiting the park means getting a chance to climb North America's tallest mountain, undisturbed from human destruction. Miners are itching to mine in Denali, but because it is a preserve, they cannot. There is an estimated $24 million in gold still untouched.

Other: Photography, videography, and research

653 miles

  • Description: This park is inside Tongass National Forest, and it is the smallest (113 acres) national park in Alaska. It is situated at the mouth of Indian River very near the town of Sitka. Sitka National Historical Park was established in 1972 to memorialize the 1804 battle between the native Tlingit that were just barely defeated by Russians because they ran out of ammunition.
  • Special Interest: This national park is made of temperate rainforest and craggy banks, and includes century-old totem poles, a battlefield, and a two story wooden Russian Bishop's House.

Value: Americans are educated about the Tlingit people and the battle between them and the Russians. Ecologically, Sitka National Historical Park provides a protected habitat for the many animals of the temperate rainforest.

Other: Scientific Research

Tongass National Forest

Stayed here 4 days hiking and sea kayaking around the islands. I spent the nights at Eagle Cabin!

  • Description: Located in the Southeastern part of Alaska, Tongass is the largest national forest in the US. Theodore Roosevelt established it in 1902, then it expanded to 16.9 million acres. Tongass National Forest is named after the Tongass clan of the Tlingit people of Alaska.
  • Special Interest: Tongass contains the largest temperate rainforest in the world, consisting of mainly hemlock, red cedar, and sitka spruce trees. It is also the largest national forest in the US, with wildlife such as bald eagles. wolves, and mountain goats.

Flew into Juneau on November 10th

Value: Logging is a huge controversy right now in Tongass, and many old-growth forests are being clear-cut, especially the desirable cedar. Officials are trying to come up with a sustainable plan for cutting the 5 million acre "potentially productive" forest.

Other Uses: Commercial salmon fishing (all 5 species of Pacific salmon are in Tongass waters) and scientific research.
