Appearance vs. Reality

Symbols and Motifs

1.. Act 1,Sc 3, Banquo asks the Witches to "look into the seeds of time, And say which grain will grow and which will not." In the following scene, Duncan tells Macbeth, "I have begun to plant thee, and will labour To make thee full of growing". The planting is a failure as in Act V,Sc.ii, Lennox refers to Macbeth and his followers as 'weeds'.

2. Act 2, Sc 3: When Macbeth kills king Duncan. Macbeth says "May Neptune wash this blood from my hands." Neptune is God of water, so here Macbeth is saying all the water in the world could not wash the blood away. I think he was trying to wash away his crime and his guilt by getting rid of the blood, as this was just a visual reminder of the wrong he had done.

3. In the Ghost scene (Act 3, Sc 4) Lady Macbeth points out to Macbeth that this Ghost (which she cannot see) is the "very painting of your fear" and "O, these flaws and starts" are just "Impostors of true fear." this gives the readers and listeners a sense that MacBeth believes anything he hears from anyone at this point.

4. In Act 2,Sc 3, Lennox tells of the 'unruly' night and the dreadful storm on the night of Duncan's murder, and in Act II,Sc.iv, Ross and the Old Man speak of the unnatural happenings of the night. Perhaps these incidents symbolise Nature's protest at the murder of a lawful King.

Quotations

The message that Shakespeare is trying to convey using this play is that what you see is not always what you get. The relationship between appearance & reality in MACBETH is one of deception. One example from the text is the fact that Macbeth appears to be loyal to King Duncan in the early stages of the play, but then he ends up murdering him. This results in Macbeth and his wife having to deceive the rest of the kingdom. "False face must hide what the false heart doth know." Another example is that the three witches enlighten Macbeth of certain prophecies that appear to be very beneficial to his future, but they turn out not to be. In reality the witches were just attempting to bring about chaos for their own entertainment.

1. Macbeth Appearance: “Your children shall be kings”. This shows at the beginning Macbeth appeared to not want to be king and he was saying that Banquo’s children will be kings.

2. Macbeth Reality: “Then live, Macduff. What need I fear of thee? But yet I’ll make assurance double sure And take a bond of fate. Thou shalt not live,That I may tell pale-hearted fear it lies And sleep in spite of thunder.” This shows that in reality Macbeth was actually a tyrant who was willing to kill anyone who got in his way. He would do anything to stay king and as he said in this quote even someone who shouldn’t be a threat he still wants killed.

3. Lady Macbeth Appearance: “The raven himself is hoarse That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan Under my battlements. Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe topful Of direst cruelty!” In this quote Lady Macbeth wants to become more mescaline so she can kill king Duncan because she feels their isn’t enough masculinity between her and her husband.

4. Lady Macbeth Reality: “Out, damned spot! out, I say! One: two: why, then, 'tis time to do't. Hell is murky! Fie, my lord, fie! a soldier, and afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to account? Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?” In reality Lady Macbeth couldn’t handle all the murders and all the blood, she slowly started to go crazy and eventually committed suicide.

5. Witches Appearance: Be violent, bold, and firm. Laugh at the power of other men, because nobody born from a woman will ever harm Macbeth. The witches are making seem like nothing bad can be done to Macbeth but in reality they are just trying to boost his ego so he will become to confident and be killed in battle.

Scene Selection

The scene we have chosen to portray in our scene selection is Act 2 Scene 2. in this scene lady Macbeth waits for Macbeth to come back from murdering Duncan. Lady Macbeth is extremely tense right now from the anticipation of King Duncans murder. she admits that she needed the help of alcohol and that she was unable to stab duncan herself. She is paranoid and she even jumps at the slightest sound. realising that he has the bloody daggers withhim, lady Macbeth takes them back to the entrance, she returns and forces Macbeth to thier chamber, so they can both wash their bloody hands and change thier clothing.
