Pope Leo XIII,
Pray for us.
Essentials of Pope Leo XIII's Encyclical: Rerum Novarum:
1. The pope wrote this encyclical because
he felt the working poor were not
sufficiently protected from violence
and injustice.
2. He understood that the poor live undeservedly wretched lives, that
most strive for better lives through
honest work.
3. The poor are envious of the rich,
and their minds are always ready
for disorder.
4. Leo pointed out that the poor are equal in citizenship to the rich and that their work is the source of the nations wealth.
5. He did not want people to see the poor as a burden but as brothers.
He wanted to show us that God has
a special place in His Heart for the poor!
6. The working poor should be liberated from the savagery of greedy people.
7. In the order of society the poor cannot be equal to the rich; but that does not mean that poverty is something to be ashamed of.
8. To suffer and endure is an essential part of being human.
9. What counts from the perspective of eternity is not how much you have but what you do with what you
have.
10. Leo urged the poor not to despair and not to turn to thievery and violence.
11. He sought to enlist the aid of the working poor in preserving peace in society.
12. KEY: Leo was concerned with the material well being of the working poor; they should receive what will enable them to be housed, clothed, secure, and to live without hardship.
