Cell Analogy Project: The Mafia

By: Caitlyn Oakes, Molly Mulligan, and Mary Piekarczyk

Centriole

Chromatin

Definition : The material of which the chromosomes of organisms other than bacteria are composed. Consists of protein, RNA and DNA.

Cytoplasm

AKA things that divide the mob into different leadership levels and "friend groups". The centriole divides the cell into different parts with different functions.

Analogy : The Chromatin is the Mob Boss's brain. it helps power the decision making for the mob

Nucleus

Definition: A thick solution that fills is enclosed in the cell membrane and fills every cell. It's made up of salts, proteins, and water. It gives the cell its shape.

Analogy: The mob mentalities, personalities, what their main job is. (Kill, make deals, etc.)

Definition: Small round structure that stores hereditary material and coordinates the cell's activities

Mitochondria

Analogy: The mob boss because the Don makes all of the decisions, coordinates activities, and knows all of the mafia's secrets and signatures

Cell Membrane

Definition : “Powerhouse of the cell” Produces ATP, the basic energy for a cell.

  • The cell membrane protects the cell and chooses what gets in the cell and what stays out.
  • This is equivalent to Mob Guards, who control what thugs get in, and what non-thugs are kept out of the mob,and don't taint their swagger.

Vacuole

Analogy : The Mitochondria is the money, fear and power of the Mafia. It powers the mafia (like the mitochondria does for the cell) and gives them energy.

Chloroplast

Endoplasmic Reticulum

Definition: responsible for the storage and transportation of food and water for the cell

Definition : Captures energy from sunlight. Uses energy to produce cell food, which is sugar. Process called photosynthesis.

Definition : Transports substances such as proteins throughout the cell.

In our analogy, the Chloroplast is the food and supplies that are delivered to fuel the Mafia with energy.

Analogy: The mafia lair, where the mob hangs out and does their mob thing. They sit around in the lair, plotting, and storing all their necessary supplies.

Cell Wall

Analogy : where deals happen, hotels, parking lots, dark vans.

Nuclear Membrane

The mafia's territory(Sicily),

Definition: Protects the nucleus by controlling what gets in and what is kept out.

Analogy: Weapons and the Don's protecters. Otherwise the fuzz (viruses) could harm it and destroythe mafia (the cell).

  • The mafia's territory(Sicily)
  • Protects the cell
  • Located outside of the cell membrane
  • Hemicellulose, cellulose, and pectin in land plants
  • We chose the mafia's territory as the cell wall because it provides sanctuary to the mafia members

Cytoskeleton

Definition: what gives the cell its shape.

Ribosome

Analogy: Sense of belonging in the mafia, rightful place. This gives the mob its shape because it molds the mob into the mob that it is.

Golgi Body

Definition : Modifying, sorting and packaging of proteins for secretion. It is also involved in the transport of lipids around the cell, and the creation of lysosomes.

Definition: Makes proteins for the cell.

Analogy : The Golgi Body is the drug deal itself, and the interation during it.

FEEEELINGSS

Analogy: the main mob dealer. Deals out "the goods" so the mob can still function as a mob.

Flagella

Nucleolus

Definition: helps the parts of the cell move

Lysosome

Analogy: motivation from fear of being cut from the mob (how far will you go?!)

Chromosomes

Plastid

AKA Mob Hitmen. The Lysosome breaks down dead cells. Mob hitmen go around, "breaking down" unnecessary mobs that are a waste of space. (such as Mary).

Definition: Nuclear subdomain in eukaryotic cells that rewrites RNA and combines it with proteins

Definition: contains code for the cell function

Analogy: the mob boss' thoughts. This is because the things the mob boss thinks instruct the mob on what to do.

Definition: responsible for the manufacture and storage of chemical compounds.

How far will you go?

Analogy : The Nucleolus is the Boss's advisor, who helps Don (nucleus) make decisions and carry out tasks

Analogy: our analogy for the plastid is lair storage, where the mobsters keep all their weapons and normal mob stuff.

Do your mob thang

Cilia

Daisy Ridley

The Queen. All Hail.

Definition: helps move and transport cell parts

Analogy: mob transportation, such as dark vans and other sketchy vehicles, that move the mobsters around
