Jan Burres
Jan was very helpful to McCandless. After he quit his job at Mcdonald´s, she allowed him to live with her and Bob at ¨The Slabs.¨ There, they sold used books at the local flea market. Jan also tried to give McCandless money, knives, and clothes when she dropped him off in Salton CIty.
Burres cared a lot about McCandless.
¨Burres was concerned about McCandless¨ (page 46)
¨I´d keep at it until he changed the subject though- because of what happened between me and my own son. He´s out there somewhere, and I´d want someone to look after him like I tried to look after Alex,¨ said Jan. (page 45)
Christopher Johnson McCandless
In this chapter, McCandless is living in Bullhead City. Here, he gets a job at McDonald´s. He is living trailer that a guy named Charlie gave him permission to use. He quits his job and then goes to live at the Slabs with Jan and Bob.
McCandless is independent.
¨But the day after he left, I found most of it in the van. He´d pulled it out of his pack when we weren´t looking and his it up under the seat,¨ said Jan Burres when she tried to give McCandless knives and clothes. (page 46)
McCandless is also introverted.
¨´Nice guy, yeah, a pretty nice guy...Didn´t like to be around too many people, though,´¨ stated Charlie. (page 42)
Charlie
Notable Quote 2
Charlie lets McCandless live in his trailer in Bullhead City for no cost. He did not own the trailer and was not supposed to let anyone live in it.
McCandless considers Charlie to be crazy and hard to get along with.
¨The only drawback is this old guy, whose name is Charlie, is something of a lunatic and it´s rather difficult to get along with him sometimes¨ (page 41)
"Despite prodding from Burres, however, McCandless revealed virtually nothing
about his family" (Krakauer 33).
Chris seems to be selective to who he is open and not open to. Earlier he seemed to want to give his real name to Mcdonald's, but now he does not want to talk about his family. This could be Chris having a bipolar issue.
Notable Quote 1
McCandless lived in Bullhead City for two months. He got a job at McDonald’s and gave his real name. He was homeless until an old man offered to let him stay in a trailer that he was watching while the owners were away. McCandless wrote to Jan Burres and Bob, who he had previously stayed with, in California's Imperial Valley. They planned to visit him, but he arrived at their campsite before they left. He told them he quit his job because he was tired of the people. McCandless stayed with Jan and Bob at the Slabs. There he helped Jan and Bob sell used books at the local flea market. McCandless was a talented salesman and tried to convince everyone to read Jack London's Call of the Wild. Every day, he would exercise to prepare himself for the rigors of the Alaska and discussed survival tactics with Bob.
Bob Burres
"Liked to read books by the Alaska guy, Jack London" (Krakauer 42). When Charlie is getting interviewed by the author, he tells him that Chris liked to read the books by the Alaska guy, which is major foreshadowing to his journey towards Alaska.
Bob is Jan´s husband. He lived with Jan and McCandless in ¨The Slabs.¨
Bob was well educated in survival skills and often talked with McCandless about it.
¨He did calisthenics each morning to get in shape for the rigors of the bush and discussed backcountry survival strategies at length with Bob, self-styled survivalist.¨ (page 45)
