Earlier Reading Systems Based on Touch for Persons with Visual Impairments
Francesco Lana Terzi (1631-1687) was an Italian Physicist who developed the first tactile reading system to be used by persons who are blind. His system included a code that was non-alphabetic and separate than reading systems that were used by persons with sight. This made it very difficult for for persons with visual impairments to have access to appropriate reading material (Alonso, et al.).
Valentine Hauy (1745-1822) adapted the traditional reading system of people who had sight by creating embossed texts using the Roman alphabet. His system was designed so that persons who are blind could learn to read by using ordinary Roman characters that were raised and could be detected through touch. Valentine Hauy was considered to be the first educator of the blind. Louis Braille became a student of Hauy. Hauy's embossed system later became an obstacle to the acceptance of Louis Braille's raised-dot invention. It was not realized until much later that Braille was the most practical format for making print and writing accessible for the blind and visually impaired.
