Tradition vs Modernization

Planting the Birth cord

They planted the birth cord in order for the ancestors to watch over her , and protect her. Signifying the sacred connection that Kahu has towards Whangara.

"This is where the birth cord will be placed... in sight of Kahutia Te Rangi, after whom Kahu has been named. May he, the great ancestor, always watch over her. And may the sea from whence he came always protect her through life." (Nani -pg 17)

Throwing a carved stone into the water

this is to help determine who the next chief of the the village will be.

What is the Message in the Book about Tradition:

Tradition is an important part of their lives. Their customs govern their way of life, and defines who they are as a people. However, in light of a new generation, it is still essential to maintain tradition but be able to accept and adapt to changing culture.

Kahu Rides the Whale

Kahu -in the present- rode a whale that was ridden over 100 years ago by her name sake
