Lumawig: Bontoc's God and

Culture Hero

Beginning

Conclusion

Lumawig came down from the sky and descended from the spiritual domains. Thereof, he cut many reeds this signifies the splitting of oversouls into many souls (soul-fragments in other traditions). Without souls, no human life is possible on the astral and physical domains that were the lowest dimensions.

Theme

The Creation

Igorot myth tells of the deeds of the Great Spirit Lumawig when he lived for a time with mortals on earth. After a time, Lumawig decides to return to the sky.

They share the belief in Lumawig as the Great Spirit who created mankind. Lumawig here is very near the truth about the Spirit-Force in divine wisdom, who is the One Universal Principle from which all objective and subjective domains of life emanated from.

Climax

Denoument

Though he also magically provides rice and pigs for their wedding feast, Lumawig receives nothing but animosity from his brother-in-law. Lumawig eventually punishes this mortal after he chides the god for not immediately creating water for the people.

Complication

Then Lumawig commanded each man and woman to marry; which they did. By were many children, all speaking the same language as their parents. They, in turn, married and had many children. in this way there came to be many people on the earth.

Immediately the reeds become people, and in each place there were a man and a woman who could talk, but the language of each couple was different from that of the others.
