AgriNeTT AIDS AGRICULTURE

OTHER EXAMPLES OF ICTs

  • NAMISTT
  • Cropster - Latin America
  • AgriNeTT - an ICT project of the St. Augustine campus of The University of the West Indies
  • Primary Focus - to build Information and Communications Technology (ICT) applications around Agriculture data.
  • Approach - To capitalize on the growing global phenomenon of Open Data and Open Access and build an Agriculture Open Data Repository. This repository will house different data sets from institutions and associations, including farm level production data, commodity prices and volumes, farm land spatial data, soils, weather, and pest & diseases tracking data.
  • Prime Objective - To create a central repository for agriculture data in which data sets can be visualized in different ways and where local developers can build applications that are useful to the national community.
  • EpiSurveyor - Guatemala
  • Three (3) applications were created: CROP EXPENSES & PROFITABILITY, LAND SUITABILITY GIS & PEST DIAGNOSIS.

DISADVANTAGES OF ICT USE IN AGRICULTURE

ADVANTAGES OF ICT USE IN AGRICULTURE

  • The lack of sufficient resources
  • Clarification of use
  • Data integrity and security

DISADVANTAGES OF ICT USE IN AGRICULTURE

Enhances agricultural production through:

  • Improved accuracy
  • Time efficiency
  • Cost efficiency
  • Improved connectivity
  • Improved the effectiveness of data collection, monitoring and evaluation
  • Software facilitates data uploading & storage in real time
  • Ability to create digital surveys
  • Strengthening of Agriculture Marketing – Marketing Information Systems (MIS)
  • Efficient decision-making on where and when to sell farm produce

  • Cost barriers to MIS
  • Challenges of MIS:
  • Economic status
  • Communication issues
  • Uncertainty of ICT effectiveness
  • Environmental constraints
  • Lack of farmer organization
  • Lack of storage facilities
  • Absence of a qualified market talent
  • The lack of a well-trained team to transfer knowledge
  • Complexity

Q&A Service

  • Information & Communication Technology/Technologies (ICTs) includes any communication device or application which encompasses the use of cellular phones/ computer/ radio/ satellite systems/ numerous software suites/ hardware systems which are used to disseminate information.

  • Development of ICT can be traced back to January 1st , 1604 where Blaise Pascal invented the first commercial calculator.

Soil and Land

Use Data

  • In the last 10 to 15 years ICTs played a pivotal part in reshaping how information was received and shared and as such it has been implemented in the use of agriculture.

HISTORY & DEVELOPMENTS OF ICTs OR E-AGRICULTURE

  • 2003 and 2005 - "E-agriculture" came into existence after the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)
  • 2006 - FAO hosted the first e-agriculture workshop with a collaboration of leading developmental agricultural organizations. Proved that e-agriculture aids in the development of rural agricultural productivity with reduced risks.
  • Green Revolution - introduced new crop varieties, government programs & new inputs. Extension could not handle the needs of farmers. ICTs transform the way in which agri extension is done by changing the medium of agricultural information.
  • Allow farmers to receive current solutions that cater to their specific needs and information to assist them in participating in markets.
