HISTORY OF MICROWAVE OVEN

http://www.sfu.ca/phys/346/121/resources/physics_of_microwave_ovens.pdf

Accidently founded during World War II

How does Microwaves Work

Scientists invented Magnetron and installed them in Britain's radar system

Later was discovered that it can cook food

1. Microwave generator, called Magnetron.

The first microwave was called the Radar Range

Percy LeBaron Spencer

Magnetron takes electricity and converts it to a high-powered radio waves (12cm).

Standing Waves

2. Magnetron blows these waves into food compartment through wave guide

3. Food sits on the turntable, spinning slowly so that microwaves cook evenly.

What is Microwave

  • Standing waves occur when a medium is constraint at a fixed point.

4. When microwaves pass through food. They make molecules inside vibrate more quickly.

Type of Electromagnetic wave

  • Wave will bounce back creating constructive and destructive wave interference to its original source

  • This will also create superpositions

5. Microwaves pass energy onto molecules in food, rapidly heating it up.

Non-ionizing

  • A standing wave will always have a fixed nodes

Can be absorbed by water , fats, and sugar

Has a frequency of 300 mHz

Has a range of 1 milimeter

Emitted by Magnetron
