How do we teach writing at school?

What do early writers need?

* Modeled writing

* Shared writing

* Guided writing

* Independent writing

* Talk for writing

* Make links between spoken and written language.

* Demonstrations.

* Models.

* Opportunity to share, reflect and discuss.

* Write in various forms.

* Feedback that focuses on the message rather

than the spelling or handwriting.

Supporting children at home.

Writing is an amazingly complex activity.

The writer has to deal with many skills simultaneously:

• thinking what to write about

• selecting appropriate content

• linking it all together

• layout of the text

• grammar

• spelling

• punctuation

• letter formation and legibility

Encourage short, 'real life' writing:

* Letters * adverts

* Emails * signs

* Notes * labels

* Posters * captions

How can we help?

• reduce the complexity of the task

• reduce the demands on working memory

• focus on one or two aspects at a time

until new skills are learned

• provide time to practise skills with

support and independently

• Marking and feedback should be

focussed on specific areas or personal

targets the child is working on.
