The Design Process is a series of non-linear steps that are used to make a better product. It consists of having an idea, stating a problem, collect information, make a plan, make a model, and
test it.
Although shoes have existed for thousands of years, the running shoe is a relativity new invention. Before the mid 1800's almost all shoes were
leather and not good for running.
The first shoe that was
suitable for running were
made by Wait Webster who
developed a way to make rubber soles as
opposed to leather ones and bind them to
a leather top.
One issue with shoes was that they were not optimized for running. Because of this, you would not run as fast or comfortably.
Research
To test his idea, Joesph
started to think about how he could improve the design. He started shaving off layers of leather and made them lighter. Eventually he added spikes and saw that it offered another
advantage.
To test his product, Joesph would wear his shoes to races. Eventually people began realizing his shoes and their advantages and began buying them which also helped him get feedback. In 1904 Alf Shrubb, a runner broke 3 records using them.
In early 1890, a boy named Joesph William Foster went to his grandfather's house. When he was there he realized that he could specialize a cricket shoe for running.
Design
Joseph Foster's plan was for incorporating the spikes was to out them in the front so that you can get extra traction when pushing off of the ground.
In order for Joesph Foster to start testing, he had to create a model. Joesph's model was called the "PUMP". They were one of the first specialized running shoes.
Today, running shoes are some of the most common shoes worn. They are now made with plastics as opposed to leather to reduce cost and weight. Joesph Foster went on to create a shoe company named Reebok that still exists today and is one of the biggest in the industry.
