Geography

The Kongo people allied with Portugal.

The Portuguese were very important part in the daily life of the Kongo. With out them the people of the Kongo would have been defeated by the internal rebellion.

From the Atlantic Ocean to the Kwango river & from the Congo river to the Kwanza River.

The Kongo's resources include iron, copper, salt, ivory, animal hides, bark cloth, exportation of slaves, and nzimbu (cowrie) shells.

Many mountains and rivers. The rivers made it very fertile, but the mountains made it harder to get from place to place and trade for other goods.

Three things that are key to distinguish this civilization from others are:

  • Slavery was a very important part of the economy and political life.
  • Outside connections, like Portugal, were very crucial and influential to the people of the Kongo.
  • The social hierarchy in the Kingdom of the Kongo was very strict and made it very hard for citizens to move up it.

The religion of the Kongo was highly influenced by

Christianity and was monotheistic in its syncretized nature.
