Though we do not have to worry about Cretinism, many areas are still affected by the disease. China is in particular danger, with millions of untreated people trying to live ordinary lives. Cretinism is largely found in rural locales, where iodine rich food is not common.

In some areas, babies with Congenital Hypothyroidism are thought to be "good babies", as they eat very little, rarely cry and sleep most the time. This is not good for the child, as symptoms associated with cretinism will only get worse with age if not treated.
Treatment for Congenital Hypothyroidism is not terribly expensive or difficult, but it must be performed at an early age. Levothyroxine is the only hormone pill recommended for treatment. The child should, though it is not necessary to, begin treatment within 10-13 days after birth.
Note: 30, 50mg Levothyroxine pills sells for $4 at Walmart.
"dystrophy of bones and soft tissues, due to congenital lack of thyroid secretion."
The thyroid gland controls development and release of growth hormones throughout the body. Cretinism develops when the thyroid does not properly secrete, or distribute, the necessary hormones to the body.
Cretinism is most commonly diagnosed to children and will affect the size and strength of bones, the stiffness of skin and mental state. Children with cretinism can expect a full life, but may not have strong enough mental and physical capacities.
Cretinism largely affects children, specifically in developing countries. Iodine is necessary for thyroid hormones, which control growth and development. It is common for the face to 'droop' (making some actions like opening ones mouth difficult). Other effects include: goiters (enlargement of the thyroid gland)
a protruding abdomen, weak bones, weak legs, bending of legs, low muscle mass, weight gain, constipation, fatigue, and choking.
Cretinism has been discovered as a state of iodine deficiency. Cretinism is common in areas with less iodine in food or water. Regions with carb-centered traditional foods, such as Latin America, are more subject to cretinism. It is understood that consumption of iodine-rich foods before pregnancy can help prevent cretinism.
