Personal Gain and Greed in The Hobbit

By Owen Rocha

THE END

Any questions?

A song to represent the book

Choices and Consequences 3

The song I chose was by the Beatles called Money ( That's all I want). I chose this song because I feel like it captures the premise of the book. Greed and money, well in the books case money is gold and treasure. The song speaks of the free things in life but also how money can get you a lot of things, no matter what world, fictional or non-fictional

The third and final choice I will be talking about is that once the group finally gets control of their mountain and they realize that the elves and the Lake people want some of their treasure. Bilbo steals the arkenstone, which is the most precious gem in the whole mountain. He steals it to bargain with the elves and The Lake people. He says as long as he gives them the stone then that would mean he would get to go home free, with no fighting and no threats. For his own personal benefits Bilbo decides to go along with this and go behind his new friends back just so he can save himself.

Choice and Consequence 2

Choice and Consequences 1

Bilbos second choice was his choice to play a game of riddles with the creature called Gollum or Smeagul. Once Bilbo gets lost in a cave full of orcs. He is completely lost until he finds this gold ring on his finger, like anyone else he picked it up and put it in his pocket. As the game of riddles begin both Gollum and Bilbo seem to be having a pretty easy time. They finally make a bet, if Bilbo wins Gollum has to show Bilbo the way out of the cave. If Gollum wins then he gets to eat him. Finally when Bilbo has enough and asks Gollum whats in his pocket. Gollum hates this question and looks for something he calls "his precious". Bilbo realizes he is talking about the ring, so he makes a run for it. As Gollum chases him, Bilbo trips and as the ring flies in the air it lands on his finger and he notices it to go invisible. He uses it to escape the cave but decides not to tell his companions about the special powers of the ring.

The first choice Bilbo makes is when he decides to follow his Took side and goes on the quest with Gandalf and his newly found companions the dwarves. It is out of the ordinary for a hobbit to want to leave his secluded village. But the reason that Bilbo decides to join is because his whole life he always felt this urge that he was meant for more, that he could be doing more. So when the opportunity rose to go on a quest, he didn't do it to help the dwarfs, he did it so that he can get hos personal goals and he can get his personal dilemmas dealt with. This choice was for his own good and his own good only.

Main Charcters

Summary

Bilbo Baggins- Bilbo possesses a great deal of untapped inner strength, and when the wizard Gandalf persuades Bilbo to join a group of dwarves on a quest to reclaim their gold from a marauding dragon, Bilbo ends up playing a crucial role as the company’s burglar. Bilbo’s adventures awaken his courage and initiative and prove his relentless ability to do what needs to be done.

Gandalf- A wise old wizard who always seems to know more than he reveals. Gandalf has a vast command of magic and tends to show up at just the moment he is needed most. Though he helps the dwarves in their quest (not least by making Bilbo go along with them), he does not seem to have any interest in their gold. He always has another purpose or plan in mind, but he rarely reveals his private thoughts

Bilbo Baggins lives in a hole in the backends of Bag End, the near town Hobbiton. Bilbo lives in a hole as all hobbits do and just like all hobbits loves the peace, quiet and the problem free lifestyle of a hobbit. This all changes as one day the great wizard Gandalf the Grey tricks him into hosting a little house party for thirteen dwarfs and ultimately persuades him into becoming their groups burglar on their adventure. The dwarfs are trying to regain their treasure from the dragon Smaug. The group prevail many road steps in their ultimate goal. During this time Bilbo starts coming into his own and feeling less like a "stay at home" hobbit and more like the burglar Gandalf believed he would be. One night during a terrible storm the group takes cover in a nearby cave. This cave is home of Goblins who capture the group, but Bilbo gets left behind. While walking through a tunnel he stumbles upon a ring and pockets it. He then meets Gollum, a creature living in the depths of the cave. The two play a game of riddles and when Gollum attempts to eat Bilbo he learns the ring can turn him invisible. Bilbo returns to the others but does not tell them about the ring. They then make their way to Lake Town who help them get the mountain. During their trip up the mountain Smaug leaves and ultimately gets killed in Lake Town by Bard. News soon spreads to the elves, goblins, and Beorn of Smaug's death, so they all want the treasure. After the elves and the people of Lake Town receive a part of the treasure and Bilbo gets to go home with his own and is left alone to live his happy quiet life.
