Jeffrey Landrigan

He began abusing alcohol by 10 and by 20 he murdered his first victim. When on trial for his second murder, he met his biological father, who was also a murderer and drug addict.

Serial Killers: Nature Vs. Nurture

Although he had a good upbringing, his genetic biological makeup had a larger role in his development.

Borderline Personality Disorder: Aileen Wuornos

-infamous serial killer diagnosed with BPD.

-impaired her ability to make rational decisions.

Serial Killers may be affected by both environmental and biological factors BUT biological factors appear to have a larger role due to the correlation between specific mental abnormalities, disorders, and genetics.

Borderline Personality Disorder

Neurological Abnormalities: Hippocampus Dysfunction

Hippocampus responsible for: fear conditioning, learning, memory, and controlling rage.

-those with BPD suffer from aggressive & violent behaviors.

-symptoms: extreme anger and devalution of others.

-associated with serial killers due to the cause of paranoia, lack of empathy, and impulsive aggression.

There appears to be a positive correlation with neurological abnormalities, disorders, and genetics.

Frontal Lobe Dysfunction

Hippocampus Dysfunction

Neurological Abnormalities: Frontal Lobe Dysfunction

Biological factors play a larger role in the development of serial killers.

Ted Bundy was a famous serial killer who suffered from APD.

He was a pathological liar that never displayed remorse for his actions.

-The frontal lobe functions as the judgement region of the brain.

-holds most dopamine sensitive neurons associated with reward, planning, self control, & motivation.

-a poorly functioning hippocampus is an explanation behind why serial killers do not experience remorse for their crimes.

-serial killers do not experience remorse because they have trouble regulating emotions due to hippocampus dysfunction.

-Ex: Albert Fish. Experienced a severe head injury at 7 yrs old and began to display violent behavior immediately after. By 20 he murdered his first victim and continued to murder more.

Genetics also play a role in the development of serial killers.

Frontal Lobe Dysfunction

Jeffrey Landrigan was a famous serial killer who was abandoned as a baby but was quickly adopted by two loving parents. He had a normal and healthy upbringing. But developed violent behavior.

-Dysfunction of this cortex displayed through poor social judgement & innapropriate behavior.

Neurological Disorders: Borderline Personality Disorder

Hippocampus Dysfunction

Neurological Disorders: Antisocial Personality Disorder

Antisocial Personality Disorder

-abnormal emotional responses may exhibit socially innapropriate behavior because of a lack of regulation of emotions.

-lack of regulation of emotions could result in aggressive, violent behavior.

-mental illness is not an indicator of serial killer behavior.

-there are many serial killers, however, that suffer from specific disorders.

Wuornos clearly displayed a lack of empathy and devaluation of people.

She was quoted in an interview saying, "[...] I'm one who seriously hates human life and would kill again."

-no concern for moral consequences is why serial killers murder people.

-serial killers do not believe their actions are wrong or they simply do not care.

-common mental disorder among serial killers.

-pervasive disregard for others.

-symptoms: aggressiveness, excessive deception, no concern for moral consequences, & lack of remorse.
