How was Grayton Founded?
W.H Butler and his son Van R Butler (founder of Van R. Butler elementary school in Dune Allen) started a resort and bought out most of Grayton Beach. below is a picture of Van r. Butler
Grayton was founded and claimed in 1855 by army major Charles T. He built a homestead for his troops. The soil was too sandy to farm and the closest town was Point Washington. 5 years later William Miller and William Wilson moved there families down to grayton, but there were no bridges to get over the Choctawatchee bay.until W.H Butler and his son Van R Butler (founder of Van R. Butler elementary school in Dune Allen) started a resort and bought out most of Grayton Beach.
