The guy in the red shirt is the Hazara and the one in white is the Pashtun.
Who was the only one that knew Baba had a Hazara son?
Amir or Hassan
In this situation, who would be the Hazara and who would be the Pashtun?
Rahim Khan
It can be explicitly seen in the novel that Hassan and Ali are treated differently in society compared to Amir and Baba. For example, Assef and his friends would call Ali Babalu and make fun of him because he had a limp from Polio. Assef and his friends were Pashtun's and felt they were superior to Hazara which made it okay to treat them horribly. When Amir and Baba went to the Bazaar they didn't get made fun of and were treated like normal people.
Quiz Time
Amir and Hassan acted as if they were brothers when they were kids, just the same as Baba and Ali did. Amir and Hassan played together all the time when Amir wasn't at school. They lived under the same roof practically and were nursed by the same woman. They may believe in different types of Islam but they are able to get along for some time. This is before Amir's selfishness is taken to the next level.
In the book, the Taliban have a strong influence as to what has happened in Afghanistan. The Taliban believe in the Sunni of Islam but they believe in it to the extreme. They went to the next level and put everyone's life at risk. The Taliban aren't true Pashtun's, they just wish to inflict pain on people. Although, the Hazara's are more hated by the Taliban hence the massacre.
It is obvious in the book that Hazara's have a different lifestyle compared to the Pashtun's. The Hazara's are forced to live in shacks with no hope of being a recognized member of society. Whereas, Pashtun's live in the houses in the upper class neighborhoods of Kabul. Baba was considered a respected member of society and would not associate himself with his Hazara servants when guests were over. Baba's own son was a Hazara and no one knew besides Rahim Khan because they didn't want to hurt Baba's reputation.
