Just as families were staring to recover a tsunmai arrives 12.5 hours later. Three waves arrived at 20-minute intervals. The second wave was larger than the first, and the third was larger than the second. The water rose about 0.30 m above the mean sea level mark. The greatest damage from the tsunami occurred on the coast between Rio Verde, Ecuador and Micay, Colombia.

An 8.8 magnitude earthquake shakes the grounds of South America. Families are now beginning to recover from the horrible damage this earthquake caused. The coast of Colombia and Ecuador suffered the most. After the tremendous tremors a tsunami crashes on the coast of the two countries. It was observed all along the coast of Central America and as far north as San Francisco and west to Japan. Over 1000 casualties. The death toll at this moment is about 1000 people. The earthquake followed by a tsunami destroyed 49 houses and killed 500 people in Colombia. This earthquake has been the 7th largest earthquake since 1900. There is about $1-$5 million dollars in damage.
The earthquake is likely to be a result of thrust-faulting.
The coastal parts of Ecuador and Colombia have a history of great mega-thrust earthquakes originating from this plate boundary.
The greatest damage from the Tsunami occurred on the coast between Rio Verde, Ecuador and Micay, Colombia.
The rupture zone for this earthquake was 500-600Km long in Tumaco, Colombia.
