WHAT DO YOU THINK THE ARTWORK IS SAYING????

What do you think the objects depicted represent? Can you decipher these symbols and metaphors???

Why was the image arranged in this way? Is there more to the story than meets the eye????

  • How is the way the issue is shown in the image similar to or different from how you see this issue in the world?
  • Whose point of view does this artwork represent?

WHAT DO YOU SEE THAT MAKES YOU SAY THAT???

Lin Onus's 'Fruit Bats' 1991

  • THE HILLS HOIST

THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN ICON

  • Where do you find it?

CLEAN WASHING

CONTRASTED WITH.....

What are these painted 'discs' around the bottom of the clothes line? What could they be?

DIRTY DROPPINGS!

  • WHY DO YOU THINK THE ARTIST CHOSE FRUIT BATS? (INSTEAD OF ANOTHER ANIMAL)
  • When they hang all together in groups in trees what what are these'groups' called?

FLYING FOXES LARGELY FEED FROM NATIVE TREES-POLLEN AND NECTAR- THEY ARE INVALUABLE AS DISPERSERS AND POLLINATORS. THEY FLY AROUND AND THEIR DROPPINGS GERMINATE AND RE-ESTABLISH NATURE WHEREVER THEY FLY AND CONGREGATE.

Now, think about the discs....why do you think they are painted with a flower design?

There are 100 life-size bats, made from a number of moulds, all painted individually. They are made out of polychromed fibreglass

Lin Onus decorated his bats with a cross hatched

design called 'Raark' (or Dhulang) This form of decoration is used by the Indigenous Peoples (the Dhuwa and the Yirrija) from the central, north-eastern region of Arnhem land. This type of painting is traditionally used in bark paintings and on the body during ceremonies. The design embodies the power of ancestral beings. The artist who, is descended from Yorta Yorta peoples (in Victoria, around the region of Echuca) had to ask permission to use this design from Arnhem land elders.Good (2001, p.3)

  • CAN YOU THINK OF ANY REASON WHY THE ARTIST USED THE 'RAARK' DESIGN ON THE FRUIT BATS?

Elements and

Principles of Art and Design
