Herbert Pocket is a very well-rounded character. He has a good personality, and is a loyal friend. He is one of the more cheery characters in the story. Overall, Charles Dicken's methods of characterization aid in the development of the important character, Herbert Pocket.

Great Expectations Character Autopsy

In the book, Great Expectations, Charles Dickens strongly characterizes Herbert Pocket. From the images and descriptions given, the reader can easily infer traits about the character. Herbert is a very well-rounded character that is developed very thoroughly in the story; he aids the development of the plot line, and also in Pip's character.

Herbert is always thinking of ways he could help Pip. Even when they go into debt, he still wants Pip to have money, money that he doesn't have. This shows that he is a loyal friend.

Eyes: What is he seeing?

Herbert sees many things, but isn't quick to assume anything. For instance, when he sees the convict in Pip's home, he doesn't assume that Pip has done anything bad. Also, when he sees things happening in peoples lives, he isn't one to gossip or tell anyone else.

Mr. Pocket has heard many stories from Pip and his father. He learned of Miss Havisham's past, and passes that information onto Pip when they first meet. He also heard Pip's childhood story of his encounters with the convict. Of all the things Herbert has heard though, he stays on Pip's side.

Herbert seems to joke around, even in some serious situations. For example, when he and Pip go into debt, they share a joke about it. Herbert also tells stories of Ms. Havisham's past to Pip.

Heart: What is he feeling?

Herbert is a very loyal friend to Pip. He feels almost like a brother to him as they have known each other for so long. He is also supportive of Pip when they are going through hard times, always looking for ways to help him. Herbert is one of the more cheery characters of the book, and never seems to be very serious or upset.

Herbert is living with Pip, and he is helping him as he becomes a gentleman. Herbert is a very loyal friend and does a lot of things to help Pip, and Pip does the same in return.

Herbert doesn't physically go anywhere, but he is on the path to marriage. He is marrying his fiance` Clara. Also, he is planning to become an insurer on ships. So he is working towards achieving that.
