What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

  • The sustainable development goals are set goals that expand on the millennium development goals adopted in 2001.
  • The goals were created to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.
  • There is, in total 17 goals.

Why was the word sustainable used?

The word sustainable was used to capture the UN's ideas and motives. It shows that the UN wants these goals to last many years. They want to make the world a better place and keep it that way. They want to sustain the world.

Do you think they are achievable?

We think they are achievable, but not in the amount of time that they are aiming to accomplish the goals. They are going to have to overcome many obstacles to achieve it.

How and why are they different to the millennium goals?

  • The millennium goals are older goals that focused on the survival of the human population whereas the UN SDG's focus on preserving society and our global infrastructure. The UN SDG's are also more specifically trying to keep the world going by creating clean energy taking action on the problems apparent to the environment.

How did the goals come about?

In 2012 at a Rio Summit, post-2015 goals were mentioned, this caused the creation of an open-working group that created a draft agenda. In March 2013 representatives from 70 countries published their final draft.

What obstacles are there to achieving the goals and targets by 2030?

The main obstacles the UN have to overcome to achieve their goals by 2030 are: money, environmental change, personnel to ensure the goals succeed and conflict between nations.
