Bronze figure on the mantle:

  • Can't be picked up-symbolizes that the characters can't leave the room
  • Can't see your reflection in it
  • Eyes on figure always watching
  • Represents absurdity because it's placed there for no specific purpose.

No reflections can be seen without the help from another being.

INEZ

  • Brought Estelle to her couch
  • died in bed with someone
  • being for oneself

-Envy

Estelle

  • -Being-for-others

Paperknife

-Absurdity-

it cannot be

used for its actual purpose

-shows Estelle's

essence

  • The set as a whole, is very simplistic.
  • There is not much that can be used for its actual purpose, which can be linked with the Existentialist idea of absurdity like that of 'The Myth of Sisyphus' that was brought forth by Camus.
  • The lack of objects in the room makes the 'torturing' of each other seemingly inevitable.

WHY ISN'T THERE A MIRROR?

Why aren't there any windows?

Questions???

  • Existentialist idea of nothingness
  • Whats the real point of living if you cannot see yourself?
  • Are you even there?
  • No time passes
  • No connection to outside world
  • No exit
  • Nothingness

-no world around you, does your life have any meaning?

-you have no effect on the world.

  • What was the significance of Inez bringing Estelle to her couch?
  • Why do you think there aren't things such as toothbrushes?
  • What does Inez do with the Paper-Knife? What does that show about her?
  • Estelle and Garcin are a reflection of how other people see them and not how they actually are.
  • Existentialist idea of encrustation.
  • Encrustaion: when an individual feels compelled to look/act/talk a certain way based on a set of complicated representations that exist about how that person really is.

'Garcin:'No mirrors.I notice. No windows. Only to be expected. And nothing breakable. (Sartre 6)
