Modern education is student-led and collaborative, harnessing the power of a collective intelligence.

To achieve this, educational environments in the 21st century must permit :

Transition the Matanzas High School media center to a 21st century digital learning commons. Research by Mihailidis and Diggs (2012) suggests the following:

Move print
to the periphery.
Make the introspective environment i
Allow for

Goal & Objectives
Technology = automation.
Automation = human resources.
Human resources better utilized.
Peer tutoring from SA encouraged.

Transition to eBooks:
Using current FollettShelf system:
Cengage for non-fiction titles.
Follett for fiction titles.
Media Specialist & Media Clerk have less clerical/ "warehousing" responsibilities.
New job descriptions for 21st century educational roles:
Information specialist
Instructional partner
Reduction of redundant technologies;
Replacement with innovation.

STEM jobs
The FGCU team has worked to create a proposal that is realistic. The following potential barriers have been considered:

Physical space
: Spatial limitations, as well as time restrictions due to regularly scheduled class time have been recognized. Using the technology and infrastructure currently available to students, we propose a digital transition to permit u-Learning.

: After analysis of many, we are initially introducing only those which we feel will have the greatest benefit on student achievement.

: While we feel strongly that any financial investment will have significant ROI in terms of student achievement, we are proposing a FY 15/16 budget that is 90% of that for FY 14/15. Potential outside funding sources are identified.
