I moved to New Bern and opened a drug store named Bradham's Pharmacy. As with many drug stores of the time, it also had a soda fountain.

It was here, in 1893, that I invented a drink recipe made from kola nut extract, vanilla and "rare oils, that I called "Brad's drink.

In 1901, I married Charity Credle in New Bern and raised 3 children named Mary, Caleb, Jr., and George. Pepsi was very successful and, by 1915, was being sold in 7 states and even made an incredible $31,000!

In 1917, all this changed as the US entered World War I. Sugar was rationed and sales plummeted when I had to use sugar substitutes. I eventually had to declare bankruptcy in 1928 and returned to work in my drug store. I remained very involved with community service in New Bern, until I died February 19, 1934.

I invented this drink in hopes of improving people's health. It had no dangerous drugs or caffeine like many sodas had and I thought it helped with digestion.

I was born and raised in a town west of here named Chinquapin, North Carolina, in Duplin County, on May 27, 1867. I graduated from the University of North Carolina and then went to Medical School at the University of Maryland, but had to drop out when my father went bankrupt. I later returned to school at Maryland and became a Pharmacist.

This drink was re-named in 1898 and has been known as Pepsi-Cola ever since.
