Whole-group instruction is a shared group reading, read-aloud, or other shared reading experience that focus on the needs of the largest group of students.
Small-groups are divided into groups of students who have similar needs in one of the four main Cafe categories. These groups are not determined by the reading levels of the students but by the goals of the students.
During student conferences, the teacher will meet one on one with students to be assessed, special instruction to be given, and goals to be set. Progress and goals are recorded in the Conferring Notebook.
Also referred to as the "pensieve", the conferring notebook contains forms for records; including conference forms, a calendar, and forms for group planning. Forms are in the back of the book.
