Deperming & Degaussing

What all this means is...

Why does this matter?

By Kathleen Sheridan

Degaussing-

Why is it needed?

Deperming-

What is the difference?

With help from...

How it works

a process of decreasing or eliminating a remnant magnetic field on a ship or submarine.

a procedure for erasing the permanent magnetism from ships and submarines to camouflage them against magnetic detection vessels and enemy marine mines

Deperming is when a ship or submarine is first made to get rid of the original magnetism.

Degaussing is used on the ship or submarine itself to reduce the amount of magnetism.

All ships and submarines are made out of metal, so they are magnetic. But magnetism is an easy way to track down enemies. So, the Navy must try to remove the magnetism from the ships and submarines or as my dad says, change the magnetic signature.

My amazing father!

The coil wrapped around is an electro-magnet. It is changing the ship's magnetic signature.

Deperming is a giant electro- magnet. The Navy uses it to be undetectable by magnets. This literally is a giant example of the experiment we did in class.

Even though you probably thought our science experiments on electric magnets were useless, electro-magnets are actually used to protect our country. So next time you do a science experiment, maybe you could find a way that it's used in real life.

This is an example of a submarine in the process of deperming.
