What I learned:

  • How a basic thermostat works.
  • How prominent control systems are everyday life.
  • Different ways of measuring temperature: Thermocouples, Resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), and PT100s.
  • Relays

Firstly the function of a basic separator was explained to me and then I was given three aims when designing a control system for the separator:

  • To be able to monitor and control the oil level.
  • To be able to monitor and control the pressure.
  • To be able to monitor the water temperature.

Why do we need to control pressure?

Safety:

  • Persons may be injured or killed who are in close proximity to the tank when it bursts.
  • Leak of natural gas could ignite and explode.

Environmental:

  • Leak of hydrocarbons could cause damage to wildlife or contribute towards global warming.

Commercial:

  • Expensive to replace tank.
  • Operational income lost while tanks is being replaced.

1) Target Mitigated Event Likelihood (TMEL) set at 0.01 (1 every 100 years)

2) Initiating Cause Likelihood (ICL)

ICL1 = 0.05 Wood ladder breaking

ICL2 = 0.1 lose footing on ladder

ICL3 = 0.2 ladder slips at base

3) Case 1 - Intermediate Event Likelihood (IEL)

IEL1 = ICL1 · PFD = 0.05 · 0.1 = 0.005

IEL2 = ICL2 · PFD = 0.1 · 0.1 = 0.01

IEL3 = ICL3 · PFD = 0.2 · 0.05 = 0.01

sum of IELs = 0.025>0.01

0.025 = 1 accident every 40 years

4) Case 2 (steel ladder and competent personnel)

IEL1 = ICL1 · PFD = 0.01 · 0.1 = 0.001

IEL2 = ICL2 · PFD · PFD = 0.1 · 0.1 · 0.1 = 0.001

IEL3 = ICL3 · PFD · PFD = 0.2 · 0.05 · 0.1 = 0.001

sum of IELs = 0.003<0.01

0.003 = 1 accident every 333.3 years

5) Case 3 (competent personnel)

IEL1 = ICL1 · PFD = 0.05 · 0.1 = 0.005

IEL2 = ICL2 · PFD · PFD = 0.1 · 0.1 · 0.1 = 0.001

IEL3 = ICL3 · PFD · PFD = 0.2 · 0.5 · 0.1 = 0.001

sum of IELs = 0.007<0.01

0.007 = 1 accident every 143 years

BP Work Experience

Work with Han

Conclusion

I have learned a lot from my experience at BP and I feel that I have gained knowledge that I will be able to use when deciding what career path I want to follow. Everyone who I encountered was friendly and willing to help me, and I think this shows the ethics that BP instils in its employees.

My Aim for the week

What I have enjoyed

Well organised and planned

Informal meetings with various people

Deadlines across the week with tasks from various people

  • I enjoyed the visit to the Isle of Grain and seeing the National Grid's LNG processing plant. It was interesting to see all the systems I had heard about in place.
  • I have also enjoyed speaking with Han because he explained to me what it was like to be a challenger and shared his experiences of BP.

Learning's and Outcomes

As control systems were a relatively new area for me, I learned a lot and I understand more what they involve, as I didn't before.
