The poem "Bonsai" by Edith Tiempo is about love and how people inspire certain objects with love for a person, and those objects become the symbol of love.
PERSONA
IT'S UTTER SUBLIMATION,
A FEAT, THIS HEART'S CONTROL
MOMENT TO MOMENT
TO SCALE ALL LOVE DOWN
TO A CUPPED HAND'S SIZE
From God’s own bright teeth,
It seems to warn the readers that being preoccupied with earthly things is vain and dangerous.
It’s utter sublimation,
A feat, this heart’s control
Moment to moment
To scale all love down
To a cupped hand’s size
Till seashells are broken pieces
From God’s own bright teeth,
And life and love are real
Things you can run and
Breathless hand over
To the merest child.
ALL THAT I LOVE
I FOLD OVER ONCE
AND ONCE AGAIN
AND KEEP IN A BOX
OR A SLIT IN A HOLLOW POST
OR IN MY SHOE.
All that i love?
why, yes, but for the moment- and for all time, both.
Something that folds and keeps easy,
Son’s note or Dad’s one gaudy tie,
A roto picture of a queen,
A blue Indian shawl, even
A money bill.
SHAWL - A PIECE OF FABRIC WORN BY WOMEN OVER THE SHOULDERS OR HEAD OR WRAPPED AROUND A BABY
MERE - THE SMALLEST OR SLIGHTEST.
More, it is evidence that love is real because these objects are concrete and not abstract. Because of them, she is sure that love lasts until the world ends.
FREE VERSE
ROTO - SPANISH WORD MEANS BROKEN
SLIT - A LONG NARROW CUT OR OPENING.
SUBLIMATION - THE PROCESS WHEN SOCIALLY UNACCEPTABLE IMPULSES ARE TURNED INTO MORE SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE ACTS AND FEELINGS.
Till seashells are broken pieces
From God’s own bright teeth,
ells us that all things in this world including humans will come to an end and in the end we will be judged according to our deeds.
BONSAI - IS A SPECIAL TYPE OF PLANT WHEREIN YOU WOULD HAVE TO LIMIT IT GROWTH BY CONSTANTLY CUTTING OR TRIMMING ITS ARTISTIC SHAPE.
These objects are easy to keep, and, thus, they become the keeper of memory and of the love that is held for the person. In a sense, they are a physical manifestation of love
because they can be held and touched, and they remain constant in form. So even if the love itself fades, the object remains, and it is evidence of the love that was experienced.
