Cohesive rootedness: a strong sense of attachment, identification, and involvement in one community. (Cross)
Boundaries
Physical boundaries like town border lines and the coast exist but do not restrict the greater community that goes across those borders. The diversity that exists within the community allows all members to feel welcome, and gives them the same opportunities for experience, education and career as well as freedom to embrace different religions and cultures.
Biographical relationship: Characterized by a strong sense of identification with place and a relatively long residence. In these relationships, place is an integral part of personal history. (Cross)
Experiences and Power Relations
My ideal community is defined through the overarching values of diversity and inclusion. The members should feel a deep connection with their community and a strong sense of attachment. Community is a close knit group of people who embody the values of respect, faith, friendship and education.
Activities such as sports clubs, fundraisers, barbeques, and meetings, bring the community together and foster support, love and friendship.
I imagine my ideal community to not only be made up of one town but the surrounding towns as well. I look at my current community as both the farmland i live near, the beach towns that are fifteen minutes away and everything in between. A community feel is built through relationships, knowing people wherever you go, and feeling a strong connection to the different aspects that make your community yours.
Education & Leadership
School, sports, and volunteering are examples of activities that are highly valued in the community. Higher education is perused by most high school graduates, whether in state or out of state.
Friendship
Through a strong sense of belonging, faith, and respect, strong and genuine relationships are developed within the community. Friendship is built through community activities such as community donation drives, children's sports leagues, community barbeques, town meetings and neighborhood games and service.
Respect
Respect is highly valued in my ideal community and exists through acceptance of diversity, and appreciation for the environment. Recycling, environmental restoration, and cleanup are practiced within the community. Loyalty and respect for the history of the community, and the foundations are demonstrated through the support of mom and pop stores, and family owned businesses which fill the town and remain the main source of commerce.
"Human landscape is a document wherein cultures unwittingly reveal their present and their past in a kaleidoscopic array of things, patterns, and symbols."
- John Brinckerhoff Jackson

Federici's family restaurant is an example of the type of mom and pop stores that would exist in my ideal community. It has been run by the same family since it opened in 1921, and is still very popular in Freehold, NJ today.
Faith
"Complete trust or confidence in something or someone."
"Strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion."
Through a strong sense of belonging, the members of the community value faith, both with religion and trust within the community itself. Religious diversity in the community allows members the freedom to practice any religion, and establishes a strong sense of faith for those who choose. Trust in the community ideals as a whole, as well as individual members creates an open and welcoming environment
Spiritual Relationship
"A strong sense of belonging which is emotional and intangible" (Cross)
Being surrounded by beautiful natural landscape such as open farmland and the beach, spiritual relationships with the community are common. These places foster a sense of peace and perpetuate a sense of belonging, as people feel this is their place.
Cohesive Rootedness
"People with a sense of cohesive rootedness have a strong sense of attachment, identification, and involvement in one community. They generally have a positive assessment of the place and expect to continue living there." (Cross 9)
Belonging
There should be a strong sense of cohesive rootedness. The people feel attached, loved and welcomed and embody the values of the community. Cultural diversity allows people to feel at home regardless of ethnicity, economic status or religion, giving all members pride in identifying with their community.
Pork Roll egg and cheese is a traditional New Jersey food. Traditions like this that make the community unique from other places allows people to establish rootedness in the community.
Diversity in cultural foods available also allows people to establish rootedness as they feel culturally welcome and at home.
This value is perpetuated through tradition specific to this community such as annual barbeques, meetings, ceremonies, places and foods. Pride in where one lives exists through the feeling of belonging, and having a greater purpose within the community. The diverse nature of the community creates a welcoming place for all people and ensures a sense of belonging.
Cultural, economic, racial, religious, and gender based diversity is the foundation of globalization, and the reason for advancement and development. Diversity allows for shared ideas and acceptance of differences. The ideal community values diversity and inclusion, making all members feel welcome and at home. Through this overarching value, a sense of belonging, faith, respect, friendship, and leadership are established and upheld.

Community Values
"Place attachment is the symbolic relationship formed by people giving culturally shared emotional/affective meanings to a particular space or piece of land that provides the basis for the individual's and group's understanding of and relation to the environment. Place attachment is more than an emotional and cognitive experience, it includes cultural beliefs and practices that link people to place" - Setha Low

Central New Jersey has both rural and suburban areas, as well as beach towns, while New York City is about an hour drive. The accessibility to a diverse array of landscapes and environments provides members of the community many opportunities and experiences, and allows for development within smaller communities.
