What is hyposthenuria?

Hyposthenuria is a clinical condition in which the urine is chemically imbalanced. This may be due to trauma, abnormal hormone release, or excessive tension in the kidney. Hyposthenuria can also happen to dogs and cats where some of the symptoms may include excessive urination, excessive thirst and occasional urinary incontinence. The causes could be things such as any disorder or drug that interferes with the release or action of ADH, damages the renal tubule, causes medullar washout, or causes a primary thirst disorder.

Hyposthenuria

Hyperadrenocorticism can cause this

What are the causes?

Very rarely as a congenital defect. Hyposthenuric urine actually indicates that the kidneys are working to some degree because they make the urine more dilute to get it into this range.

There are many things that can cause hyposthenuria. To see what caused it, the urine is tested and it may have been caused byexcessive drinking for behavioral reasons, central diabetes insipidus, (lack of production of anti-diuretic hormone, or ADH, by the brain), nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, or resistance to the effect of ADH at the kidney level:

Some forms of drug therapy

Kidney failure due to amyloidosis

Hypercalcemia (too high calcium levels -- hyperparathyroidism, metastatic cancer, poison)

Low serum potassium levels

pyelonephritis (infection of the kidney itself)

Hyposthenuria is also related to the sickle cell disease. The sickle cell disease is a hereditary disease which are red blood cells that are sickle-shaped instead of round because of an abnormality in their hemoglobin, which is the protein that carries oxygen in the blood. Because of the shape, the cells can cause blockage of small blood vessels in the organs and bones, which reduces the amount of available oxygen. This relates to hyposthenuria, because the patients who have the disease are sometimes unable to urinate normally, and their urine is made up of low specific gravity.
