What is Plot?

Ship-Gathering

Plot is the main events of a play, novel, movie, or similar work, devised and presented by the writer as an interrelated sequence.

Plot of Black Ships Before Troy

The kings set out to get Helen back and get vengance upon Troy. This is what started the war.

When Menelaus found out that Paris had run away with his wife, he was red with rage. He called for Agamemnon, the High King, for help. Agamemnon chose Nestor, Thisbe, Pytho, Ajax, Diometes, and Odysseus to help Menelaus get Helen back.

Single Combat

Hector told his brother that the war started because of him so he shouldn't be playing with his weapons, so Paris replied by saying "My brother, there is justice in your harsh words. But it is not cowardice that has held me here-grief for my ill-doing has made me weak, and I was only seeking a few breaths of time to gather my strength before going out again among my sword-companions. All that you say, Helen has but now been saying to me, and behold, you find me in the act of putting on my war gear."

Helen asked Hector of he wanted to stay for awhile but he declined because he wanted to say goodbye to his wife, Andromache. He left their house and went to his own. Andromache begged him not to go to war but he said that his fate was to fight for Troy. He said his last words to his son and left to go fit.

Andromache and Hector

Hector was told by the soothsayers to go to his mother, Hecuba, " 'and take the most splendid of all her jeweled robes, and go up to the temple of gray-eyed Athene and lay it across the knees of the sacred statue. And pray to Athene to cease from giving all her strength to the Greeks and show mercy to the people of Troy, who are people also." He did as he was told, but he did not go straight back to battle, he went to the house that his father built for Paris to speak with Helen. There he found his brother fretting over his armor and messing and with his bow. He also saw Helen working on a "rich tapestry" on the loom.

Paris, being the man he is, decided to pick Aphrodite's bribe. He left his old wife, Oenone, to take, "Helen of Fair Cheeks," as his wife. Helen, however, was married to King Menelaus. Paris went to their palace and convinced Helen to go with him and leave her husband.

Women of Troy

On the day Zeus came back to Olympus, Thetis had begged him to give Troy victory because of Achilles' request. Even though he didn't want to, Zeus granted her demand.

The goddesses saw and asked him to choose who was the fairest. Athena bribed him by promising him, "supreme wisdom if he would name her." Hera guaranteed him, "vast wealth and power and honor if he awarded her the prize. And finally Aphrodite, "whispered that she would give him a wife as fair as herself if he tossed the apple to her."

The goddesses asked the guests that attended the banquet who was the fairest. Everyone refused to vote, fearing that they will offend the other two. The goddesses decided to go to the son of King Priam, Paris.

Although Paris is a prince, a prophecy stated that he would bring sorrow to Troy. He was sent out to the wild to die, but a shepherd found and raised him.

The war could have ended between King Menelaus and Paris, but Athena wanted the peace to be broken between them. Athena got Prince Pandarus to shoot Menelaus. He shot him in the chest but it only gave him a wound.

The Golden Apple (Chapter 1)

Paris had decided to challenge the Greeks, "to any warrior who would come out and meet him in single combat." Menelaus decided to fight him in revenge for Helen. Paris, being the coward he is, got scared. Hector encoraged him to do it and the two sides agreed it would be a fight to the death.

After Paris was brought to Troy, Aphrodite came up to Helen and told her, "Come now, back to your own house. Paris, your lord, is there in the great chamber and calling for you." Helen had begun to despise Paris, even though she had loved him. Aphrodite had forced Helen, out of pride, to love him.

However, the warriors did indeed want to go home to Greece. They all started to run toward the ships happily. Only Odysseus refused to move. He got the warriors back, even though they were not very happy. Thersites, one person from the army protested about running from the ships. Knowing he should stop him, Odysseus had tortured Thersites by beating him and laughing. Soon everyone started laughing at the sight, making them eager to fight.

Paris had the first throw in the death match, and he did not do any damage. Menelaus cried in vengeance and he had only speared Paris' armor, not affecting his body. He had tried to drag Paris to the Greek lines, after losing his sword, but Aphrodite cheated and caused Menelaus to have nothing but a helmet in his hand. Then, while he was distracted, Hector gave Paris an invisibility cloak and brought him to the Troy.

Whoever had survived would win Helen and would be victor.

Helen had heard about this and was upset. But Priam had told her he did not blame her for the war.

They began to charge the Trojans. The Trojans had known Achilles left and they took advantage of it by meeting the Greeks in battle.

Then Agamemnon did an absurd thing. He decided to test the, "temper of the army." He would tell them, "the siege had already dragged to long, and the time had come when they should run their ships down into the water, and burn the camp behind them and set sail for Greece." But if the army had actually agreed, he would try to get them to fight again.

He sent Agamemnon a false dream that said to, "make the war-host ready for battle." At first, Agamemnon believed it, but then he realized dreams can be fake. He called a meeting with the war counsel.

Agamemnon heard about this action and declared that if Menelaus died, the Greeks would leave Troy and the Trojans would win. This ended the truce between the Trojans and Greeks. Diomedes killed many people and left a trail of dead bodies behind him as he fought the Trojans.

Thetis got married and there was a feast that everyone except Eris, the goddess of discord was invited to. This made her angry and she came to the feast unwanted. She threw a golden apple that said, "For the Fairest." This caused Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena to argue about who was the fairest.

Quarrel With the High King

Foundation

Foundation is the back story, or the setting. It is where the readers are introduced to the characters.

When the Greeks arrived at Troy they took all the girls. While fighting Troy they stayed on the beach for nine years. After ten years, Briseis and Chryseis were captured by Achilles.

The father of Chryseis had asked for Chryseis back, and because he was a priest for Apollo, Apollo got mad and shot arrows of plague at the Greek camp. Agamemnon had to give Chryseis back, so the camp would be safe. Agamemnon and Achilles became attached to Chryseis and Briseis so they didn't want to give them back. Agamemnon demanded that if he had to give back Chyrseis, then Achilles couldn't have Briseis. When Briseis was taken away from Achilles he was offended and told his mother, Thetis to tell Zeus that he should make the Trojans win, as a punishment to the Greek king, Agamemnon.
